Intermittant Interior Lights

Recommended Posts

About once a week, I open my doors at night and the interior lights don't come on. I have checked every door and it makes no difference. I have opened and closed the door multiple times it it doesn't make a difference. I do hear a relay click in the trunk. My feeling is that this can be a couple of things. Does anyone know if the interior lights are commanded off in daylight by design?

My guess is that the relay in the trunk for the interior lights is intermittant, but what bothers me about that thought is that opening and closing the door to cycle the relay does not make a difference. Then all of a sudden I open the door maybe the next night and the interior lights are working...

I need to go out now and see if the interior lights are commanded OFF during the bright sunlight, if they are maybe I have a light sensor problem.

Any ideas?

I would need to see your schematic diagram, Mike. There are just too many variables from model to model and using my manuals to fix your car is not a good starting point.

The relay you are hearing could be associated with some other system that is switched by door-open logic.

Thanks Jim, I will look in the manual and see what I see. I have done that already a couple of times but not recently. I will post a scan of it so we can talk about it, Thanks

It may or not be related to your problem, but ever since I have owned this car the interior lights wont come on when you open the door but when you shut it they come on and cycle as they should .

This probably happens nine times out of ten.

Inquired here and the general feeling was it probably was related to the PCM, either screwed up or on the way out.

I just noticed on mine (daytime) that they do not come on either. Then I threw the floor mat over the dash light sensor, and they came on everytime I opened the door. And regardless, they came on when I shut the door as mentioned. That makes sense. If you left your door open in the daylight, or under a light at night, where you would not see the interior lights on easily from say your house.............it would prevent the battery from running down. And in the dark, you would be able to see the lights were on in the car. Maybe...........I don't know. Seems overthought though.

That is good to know. Since I am having some Twilight Sentinal problems maybe this is ALL related to my Sunload sensor, I need to look into the manual. Thanks for the test you ran... MIke
