Kudos to Ranger

Just wanted to thank Ranger for offering up the suggestion that my FPR may be bad.

I was participating in a gas octane thread, and mentioned that my car has difficulty

with hot starts if I use any octane lower than 94. Ranger suggested that my car

exhibited classic FPR symptons, and he was bang on.

I replaced my plugs, wires ( AC Delco, really pricey up here at $200), and my FPR.

At 106k, my STS runs like a new car. It pulls like a train, idles perfectly, and best of

all, no driveability issues if I use 89 octane fuel.

If properly maintained, these cars must be the best used buy on the market. They

drive beautifully when set up correctly.

So, thanks again to Ranger for chiming in on Jason's octane thread and steering

me in the right direction when I didn't realize I had an issue. :)

A great example of why I read this forum everyday.

Forgot to mention ... my fuel economy has improved significantly.

Does a poor FPR really affect fuel economy that much, or is it

likely the new plugs and wires at 106k?

A tip for Canadian Caddy lovers... (or anyone buying parts at the dealer)

All GM dealers will negotiate on EVERYTHING they sell... New cars, used cars, parts , service... etc...

Before you pay "list" for your parts. Ask if there is a discount for loyal customers... Normal "friends and family" discount is about 15% on parts.. (its like they throw in the the sales tax and GST for free ;) )

Deeper discounts are available. If they won't budge try a different dealer... or take in a print out of the price on www.gmpartsdirect.com (converted to Canadian dollars) and ask why the difference and if they can help you out... Be polite, super nice... If you have a trophy spouse... send them in... flirting can't hurt either...

At my dealer (and I believe most)... Once you are in the computer as getting a discount you are in there forever... So if this makes you uncomfortable you only have to ask once...

Me, I like to ask every time  My parts guy... who knows me by name... when he tells me the price always says "Ya Greg, and before you ask, that includes your discount!"

I hear you ... dealer wanted $250 for wires.

I buy from an automotive supply house who specializes

in AC Delco, I always get a "jobber" discount, and the

wires still came in at $199 cdn.

Ted,

Glad to hear the problem is solved.

Yes the FPR will affect economy, greatly. The engine is using the fuel that the PCM is commanding via the injectors (metered fuel). With a leaky FPR it is also using the fuel that leaks through the ruptured diaphram (unmetered fuel). Esentially the same as a leaky fuel line except that it is leaking into the manifold and being burnt rather than leaking to the ground.
