Check engine soon. Digits missing on info centre

From time to time I get the Check engine soon light on. My information centre display is only half working (half digets displaying) so I can't get the codes.

Any help with the info Centre?

Any other way to get the codes?

In fact the first time I got the check engine light was the day after (20 min ride), which in fact is the first time I tried to reveal the codes. Started to think revealing the codes caused the problem. Or I thought it could be from the fact that, that night I drove the car very hard. Lots of WOW. This was when another member of this site (JC) came over to feel what a lower STS felt like with Super Turbo exhaust.

The next time it came on was when I gave the car a little throttle when I had a hard time to start it. You seen I have this other long term problem. It does'nt happen often, but sometimes when the car is warm and it doen't ignite on the first try, it won't start unless I leave it for about 15sec. Kind of like a Carb flooding. I was impatient about this one day and decided to hold the peddle down a bit to help out. This worked to get the car started. However the car started to miss, hicup etc... for about two miles. The Check Engine Soom Light came back on. I stopped and restarted the car. Light went away and stalled again. Got it started again and drove home but the Check Engine Soon light came back on. No real drivability problem though.

Next day car started a little rough in the cold and stalled with the Check Engine light on in first 100 feet.

Left the car for a week and she started with no problem. Drive for about 20 minutes and the light came back on. Started to flash a little too. Stopped and restarted and no problem.

Next day no problem until after driving a little hard. Well very hard wow. The car missed a little then The Check Engine light came back on. Restarted then car and no problem.

Drive to work today and no problem.

I don't drive this car much anymore. Maybe once every two weeks. I thought that had something to do with it. My plugs are only Two years old with only 20k on them.

Gas mileage is off about 2 mpg. I only get 14, but very little highway and a heavy foot.

Any thoughts.

I purchased an Actron CP9125 code reader for my wifes Monte Carlo that works fine reading and erasing codes on my 96 Deville, it was about $40 to $50. It was for OBD2 systems. Actron also has 3 manufacturer specfic OBD1 readers for your 93 vehicle, see the details here:http://www.actron.com/product_category.php?id=249 I got it at autozone. Mike

I found this Actron CP9001 for $30

Here is the CP9001, looking at the manual its tedious, but you will get the codes...

You might be able to get a new DIC also from a scrap yard... When the initial SEGMENT CHECK comes up, are sections missing?

I just did a search under http://www.car-parts.com and was unable to located a new DIC for you, but I believe that is what you need. (84,000,000 car parts?)

I just called my local scrap yard and they say they DO appear to have one in stock (I need to see it for myself) and it would cost $35 not including shipping, let me know if you are interested in it and I will send you my address to send the bank check/money order.. I will have to remove the unit and ship it to you... Mike

TAKE A DIGITAL PHOTO OF YOUR'S AND POST IT HERE...If you decide to do this

Here is one for a 93 fleetwood, will this fit?

Thanks for all the research Mike. That is awesome!

The fleetwood would not fit.

In fact the cluster has to be from a 93 STS. Even a 94 STS won't fit. I even heard that some 93 STS clusters won't fit. I will get the part number from my local dealership.

Of course I would like to get the one you mentioned if it fits.

My car stranded me this morning. The car started very rough and eventually died a mile from my home. Turned the ignition to on and believe a heard the fuel pump turn on and off a few times. One turn of the key I had no fuel pump sound at all.

Then the 3 minute security wait thing came into action. This only happened to me once before and it was my memory of it that told me it was going on today, obviouly not the display, because I barely have one. Very cold day for this to be going on. Once that was over the car would not start. Had to try four times to get the thing started again. Again it seemed that it was flooded. I know there is no way it could be flooded but it needs a wait time after a failed start to eventually start. The check engine soon is obviously back with a vengeange.

ouch!!!! <_<
