Logan
Moan/Squawk Noise During Low Speed Turning Maneuvers (Replace Power Steering Gear and Pressure Hose Assembly) 2000-2002 Cadillac DeVille, Deville Professional, Seville Built Prior To VIN Breakpoint 2U142766 This bulletin is being revised to add the 2000 Cadillac DeVille, Seville and the 2000-02 Cadillac DeVille Professional to the models and to add part number for each. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-02-32-001A (Section 02 -- Steering). Condition Some owners may comment on an audible moan/squawk type noise that is heard during low speed turning maneuvers. Cause This condition may be due to power steering gear valve instability resulting in a pressure disturbance which creates an audible noise that is transferred through the vehicle structure. Correction Following the procedure below, replace the existing components with the new power steering gear, and the power steering pressure hose. In addition to these components, a new bolt will be required to secure the clamp that is part of the new hose assembly, to the frame. Important Some 2000-01 vehicles may have had the new power steering pressure hose previously installed in an attempt to correct this condition. These vehicles will not require hose replacement and can be identified by inspecting the power steering pressure hose. The new pressure hose will have a metal clamp at the point of attachment to the frame and will be secured by a bolt. 2002 model year vehicles after VIN breakpoint 2U100085 were built with the new high pressure power steering hose. The new power steering gear entered production on vehicles built after VIN breakpoint 2U142766. Only the new steering gear should be installed on vehicles built BETWEEN these VIN breakpoints. All vehicles after VIN breakpoint 2U142766 should not require service for this condition. Install the Steering Column Lock Pin J 42640. On DeVille model vehicles, remove the screw and two nuts securing the coolant recovery bottle. Rotate and secure the coolant recovery bottle rearward to gain access to the power steering pressure hose upper clamp on those vehicles requiring hose replacement. Remove the nut securing the power steering pressure hose upper clamp to the engine on vehicles requiring hose replacement. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose at the power steering pump on vehicles requiring hose replacement. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies. Disconnect the height sensor links from the LCA studs on the vehicles equipped with Road Sensing Suspension (RSS). Disconnect the steering intermediate shaft at the power steering gear. Support the rear of the frame assembly. Remove the four rear frame mounting bolts. Remove the 2 bolts and nuts securing the transaxle mount to the frame assembly. Remove the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle nuts. Disconnect the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles using a Universal Linkage Puller J 24319-B. Disconnect the front stabilizer shaft end links and rotate the shaft upward to provide access to the heat shield/steering gear fasteners. Lower the rear of the frame assembly approximately 50 mm (2 in). Remove heat shield attaching bolts. Disconnect the wiring harness clip from the shield and remove the shield. Disconnect the steering gear wiring harness. Disconnect the power steering pressure and return hoses at the steering gear. Remove the steering gear to frame attaching bolts and remove the steering gear. Remove and discard the existing power steering pressure hose clip from the frame on vehicles that require hose replacement. Remove and discard the power steering pressure hose on vehicles requiring hose replacement. Install the new power steering pressure hose on vehicles requiring hose replacement. Transfer the outer tie rod ends from the removed steering gear to the new gear. Install the new steering gear. Tighten Tighten the gear to frame attaching bolts to 65 N·m(48 lb ft) On vehicles requiring hose replacement, secure the clip of the new power steering pressure hose to the frame with the new bolt, using the hole in the frame where the previously removed clip was attached. Position the clip fore-aft. Tighten Tighten the bolt to 7 N·m (60 lb in). Hand start the power steering pressure and return hose fittings at the steering gear. Tighten Tighten the hose fittings to 27 N·m (20 lb ft). Connect the power steering wiring harness connector. Position the heat shield and install the wiring harness clip to the shield. Install the heat shield fasteners. Tighten Tighten the fasteners to 9 N·m(79 lb in). Raise the frame into position and hand start the frame mounting bolts. Tighten Tighten the bolts to 191 N·m(141 lb ft). Install the outer tie rod ball joints to the steering knuckles. Tighten Tighten the nuts to 45 N·m(33 lb ft). Install the transaxle mount bolts and nut. Tighten Tighten the bolts and nuts to 50 N·m(37 lb ft). Rotate the stabilizer shaft into position and install the stabilizer shaft links. Tighten Tighten the links to 13 N·m(10 lb ft). Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Tighten Tighten the pinch bolt to 47 N·m(35 lb ft). Connect the height sensor links to the LCA studs on the vehicles equipped with Road Sensing Suspension (RSS). Install the wheel and tire assemblies. Tighten Tighten the nuts to 140 N·m(100 lb ft). Lower the vehicle and remove the Steering Column Lock Pin J 42640. On vehicles that required hose replacement, position the upper clamp of the pressure hose onto the engine stud and secure with a nut. Tighten Tighten the nut to 9 N·m(8 lb in). On vehicles that required hose replacement, hand start the pressure hose fitting at the steering pump. Tighten Tighten the hose fitting to 27 N·m(20 lb ft). On DeVille model vehicles that required hose replacement, rotate the coolant recovery bottle into position. Hand start the screw and two nuts. Tighten Tighten the screw to 6 N·m(53 lb in). Bleed the power steering system following the applicable Service Manual procedure. Inspect the power steering system for leaks. Check and adjust the front toe following the applicable Service Manual procedure. CBOYLE15
We had the hose and clip done on our 2001 DTS. Did not fix groan, dealer replaced rack under customer satisfaction warranty (car was 6 months old at the time) Problem resolved. Charlie
DTS_driver
So does that mean the holes for the clips must be drilled at a new location? because they certainly do not cross over by the existing holes....I also Had a heck of a time trying to feed the house through and could not get it. Im gunna swing by my shop by tonight and match the part #, I hope its the right one and hopefully they didnt make a mistake at the manufacturer when they bagged it.
