Question on coolant crossover replacement

Recommended Posts

Hey all, I'm doing a coolant crossover on a 97 Seville with the Northstar. What is the easiest way to get the wiring harness out of my way enough to get to the lower bolts? The job isn't all that bad except for that stupid wiring. What do I need to disconnect to make it move? Thanks in advance!

There is a leg of wiring that runs behind the front exhaust manifold.. disconnect

Ac compressor

Alternator

Oil level sensor

2 crank sensors pay attention to which color is on top i think grey on top

Oil pressure sensor

O2 sensor

Tranny connector and maybe injector rail but you should have the intake out

Cooling fans

Brake modulator and ground

Ground off engine

That harness should pull out, but you may get away with just lifting the big bunch from the valley between the engine and trans below the crossover

PRNDL module MARK IT and remove frame it sits on

Engine temp sensor

All connectors off intake and intake manifold

Manhandle the large conduit and pull it up out of the valley. You will need a plethora of tools and skills to get to the bolts to get them in and out and tight. I actually just reinstalled a crossover sunday and used a small 1/4 inch ratchet and 13mm socket to get at the bolts on the lower right as there is not a lot of room for wrenches. Ratchet wrenches with fine click movement are helpful.

Put non hardening gasket cement on the bolts many go into the coolant passage and leak along the threads

I would avoid removing the pcm and relay center, etc.

I am currently reinstalling an engine carriage with new engine on a 97 Eldorado. You are doing a very very hard job, dont underestimate it.

Good luck, pop back for help.

I was thinking about this thread when I was driving before. Iv done 4 crossovers and I want to share my experience.

Be sure to clean the gasket surfaces good, use plastic scrapers to avoid scratching the block and head aluminum. I used a flat metal scraper on the crossover being careful not to scratch.

Put the crossover into position after clearing the electric conduit sufficiently. Use your finger to spread the non hardening gasket cement on the threads.

Start on the lower right, put the two bolts in but not sticking out yet on the engine side, manually slip the new seal behind the lower right and when lined up, pop the bolts through about 3/8 of an inch then gently place the crossover into position and start the two bolts, just 3 or 4 turns. Then do the same for the lower left, but just when you thought the lower right was hard the lower left is harder. On the lower left put the 2 bolts in place BEFORE dropping the crossover into place as I described above, so the bolts are there because there is not a lot of room to get the bolts in with the electric conduit in the way. Then do the same manually sneek the seal in place on the lower left pop the bolts through to hold it in place and start the bolts 3 or 4 turns.

Then do the top the same way. The crossover gets torqued to 18 ft lb but you can not get a torque wrench in there so I torque the bolts I can get to and use them as a guide for me to manually tighten the ones the torque wrench can't get to

Fun fun....good luck
