99 deville hard cold start - replaced fuel pump and fpr - what now?

Recommended Posts

OK - so my 99 Deville got to where I had to crank forever to get it to start in the morning. So after reading forums I replaced the FPR to no avail, then I replaced the fuel pump. After replacing the fuel pump it starts better, but I usually have to turn key on and off 3-4 times to let the fuel pump cycle then still have to keep starter engage 5-6 seconds while it sputters and tries to start before it finally does. I guess I'm going to have to buy a pressure tester and check pressure. I never smell or see any gas whenever it's running and after the first start it cranks great the rest of the day. Only after it has been sitting for 12 or more hours this happens. I did a light cleaning of the TB but didn't use a toothbrush and get everything off the back of the flap, but it seems to be moving freely. Changed the plugs 4k miles ago (117k on car now). It looks like it has the nylon rail. Could it be plug wires or leaking O ring on an injector? What should I read fuel pressure wise with key on before first crank? 40psi? Idle air control valve was just replaced too. Been searching these forums but haven't had any luck. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

The first thing you should have done was test the pressure, parts replacing can be a waste of money. A fuel pressure gage would tell you how quickly your pressure gets up to spec and then you could determine if its electrical or due to the pump.

I did not see where you checked for codes, you have an on board diagnostic computer and you can retrieve the codes yourself without a reader. Go to the bottom of my post here and read how to retrieve and post any codes here. THAT is the first place to start. Then check fuel pressure

Sorry - forgot to say there were no codes and car runs great after starting. Before I replace fuel pump I had to turn key on and off like 10 times to get it to start - after replacing pump I just turn it off and on 3 times and it will start. I guess I will just buy a pressure tester and go from there (my wife gives me hell whenever I want to buy an expensive tool). Thanks. I'll report my pressure findings when I check them.

The statement that you needed to turn the key on and off to start sounds like this could be a bad fuel pump relay, if I were you, I would replace that. The new pump would draw less current than the old pump, so that is why it has improved a bit. I would look toward replacing the relay first before you buy a gauge. You may be able to swap in a known good one or get one from a scrap yard.

A good fuel pressure gage is always useful to have when you diagnose, Sears has one. If she thinks an occasional tool is expensive try taking the car in for service...
