jeffmr269
hey yes so i have a 96 sts with the 4.6 motor and im haveing problems with the shift silonoids i think? everybody that has looked at has said its the shift silonids so i have got the kit from the dealer and went to put it in. as i took the bottom pan off i noticed there was like a piece of tape about 3-4 inchs long hanging down from one of the solenoids so i thought for sure that was the problem! took the valve body off and swapped out the silonoids. i didnt use any grease to put the check balls back in i just had them in place and held it tight together and flipped it over so they would move i hoped for! well got it all put back in back just like i took it apart! pour the fluid no leaks think i have this problem fixed and i crank there car throw it in gear and NOTHING! u dont hear or feel its even trying to shift into gear? could the check balls be in the wrong spot or move around? could it be a wrong type of fluid to cause this to happen? i read on one post that u should reset the computer stuff after the new shift silonoids are in but i dont know how to do that anybody know how? thanks for everybodys help that helps me! BodybyFisher
Try disconnecting the battery to erase the codes If you dont know how to check for codes go to www.caddyinfo.com go to how to, go to DTC codes and follow the directions for your year to check your codes If you were careful about the check balls you should be ok Did you use OEM shift solenoids?, did you use the brackets they came with?, if there were orings on the shift solenoids did you use them?, connect them? What were your symptoms before you did the shift solenoid? Pull your codes and post them here Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

BodybyFisher
If you had second gear starts and now no engagement in either F or R, something is amiss. I would check to make sure the check balls are in the correct position, here is a location diagram. I would also make sure that the two filters are seated (the pan filters). And I would make sure the shift solenoids are fully seated and the connections correct. BodybyFisher
Glad to hear it! Good Job! Let us know how we can help, going forward! Actually, Rockauto shows two different part numbers for the shift solenoids. While I have never had to change the shift solenoids, I was under the impression however that the 2 solenoids were the same, so this is good to know. Not sure what they mean below that 24236186 replaces 24236186 (same numbers) but what is more important is that the 1-2, 3-4 part number differs from the 2-3 part number. This will be good information for members in the fututre, Thanks ACDELCO Part # 24207662 {#24236186} replaces 24236186 VALVE,1-2,3-4 SHFT SOL w/4-SPD A/TRANS(MH1) ACDELCO Part # 24207384 {#24236187} replaces 24236187 VALVE,2-3 SHFT SOL w/4-SPD A/TRANS(MH1) If you don't mind, I changed the title of your thread to more reflect your problem and resolution, thanks Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
