mfletch69
Hi all, Just bought a beautiful '02 STS with 43k miles. So far it has gotten new oil, cooling system flush, brakes and a steering shaft and it runs great. Question....is there anything I should be aware of with this engine/tranny? My mechanic says they have some defect that will overheat the engine and he does not seem to be too impressed based on his experience. Can anyone confirm this? Are there any fixes? Thanks Edited November 4, 2010 by mfletch69
Bruce Nunnally
Congrats on the new car. No, there is not a 'defect' in the engine; it is an award winning design. Keep it well maintained and you should get years of good service from it. IF it does need new head gaskets down the road, the entire drivetrain has to come out, and the heads need to be timeserted. This process can be much more expensive than doing a head gasket on a chevy V8, so it makes the fix much more daunting than it would be otherwise.
