What is an overstressed torque converter?

Recommended Posts

I have a 92 Deville that I purchased several months ago and have fixed most everything except I pulled a code for a torque converter overstressed. The problem that I have is when I start the car, there is the sound of someone holding a solid object and hitting it with something that is going around about once every minute. The speed of the sound does not increase with the engine speed or does the volume of the engine. Since this is the only code that I could get from the car, I assume that it is the problem.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Did you pull any other codes? Sometimes there is also a P0741 code, in the later model transmission not sure if the 4.9 platform sets it

I did not pull any other codes, but I am not sure that I did the code check correctly. I did it according to the sticky note in this forum, but I kept pushing the hi or low button to go thru the codes. Is this the correct way to do it or should I have just left it sit there and it would have automatically showed all the codes?

Also, I have not figured out how to clear the code. I thought about clearing the code and driving it for about an hour to see if it comes back.
