joeb
had voltage fluctuation for awhile. changed alternator without having original unit checked. dumb move. problem came back after a month. i knew new unit was ok and finally tracked it down to broken wire in sense circuit. took apart connector on alternator and wire broke with gentle tug. must have been broken internally but not thru insulation. how many home mechanics would have caught that? or even a shop? maybe after changing the alternator? CarlaValentine
Bummer. Look on the bright side though, you shouldn't need a new alternator any time soon.

joeb
but there was nothing wrong with the alternator. the sense/excite circuit tells the alternator to actually output some voltage/amps. the dash says 11v, your vom says 11v on battery terminals. you change alternator and one month later it stops working. bad alternator, right? wrong.
