Bruce Nunnally Posted January 21, 2010 Report Share Posted January 21, 2010 EDMONTON - High-end cars and SUVs stolen in Canada could be financing global terrorism, warns the Insurance Bureau of Canada. “There’s definitely a pattern,” says Rick Dubin, the bureau’s vice-president of investigations. “We don’t have absolute proof, but that’s what it looks like.” Investigators are tracing more and more vehicles stolen in Canada to unlikely destinations like Nigeria, Lebanon and Eastern Europe, where it’s suspected that they’re being sold to finance terrorist groups. The number of auto thefts across Canada has been steadily going down in recent years. Edmonton saw a drop of nearly 16% between 2007 and 2008, thanks in large part to police crackdowns on joyriders and opportunistic thieves, who are responsible for the vast majority of thefts.
