water pump gasket spit out

Recommended Posts

hello all, long time no post. I just replaced the water pump on my 92 deville, 4.9 for the 3rd time. Old girl has 210k on her now. On my drive in this morning i developed a leak at the top of the pump housing. it appears the water pump gasket is coming out. I never had this happen on my other two installs. What did I do wrong. I used gasket adhesive to secure gasket to pump before mounting

That certainly is odd, since you used gasket sealant, are you sure you tightened the bolts to spec and removed any old gasket material?, a piece a extraneous old gasket material might be holding you off from a good seal

I only applied sealant to the pump side of gasket. I am pretty sure I got all the old material odd with my scraper. I will admit i dont have a manual and guessed on tightness and just tigtened in what i thought was a logical sequence. My last install lasted 70k so i thought i was pretty close. Just a little extra info, old pump started leaking while my 16 year old daughter was driving , she drove it untol the shut down light came on.

Very odd that it would spit a gasket given you used sealant on one side and tightened it down. Please let us know when you tear it apart again

I am going to get into it again tonight. I hope I dont have a head gasket or cracked head issue letting pressure blow out gasket. No signs of coolant intrusion into oil. Don't have a chemical tester but may have to get one.

na, I doubt that, that gasket should not blow out at all under any pressure

I had a 91 Seville, I loved that engine and car, so I know what you mean. I changed that water pump about 4 times

Be SURE you use the cooling supplement tablets, they are required in your 4.9
