hi, i'd like to first, thank everyone on here for there posts and pictures.

this site has been very informative to me. i've learned alot about this motor and it's potential from this site alone. i fell in love with the 98-2004 generation sts from it's debut. yet, it has it's quirks like any other motor.

i've always felt gm at times produced some amazing motors, only to be appreciated by a handful.

i'm interested in finding out on which is the easiest way to remove the northstar, if i were to remove it at home. through the top, or through the bottom.

the reason for removal would the usual headgasket issue. which i plan to resolve by time insert or head studs instead of bolts.

thanks

thanks mike.

to me it's a shame to see some of these engines going to waste or scrap. unfortunately the engine compartment is so tight and intimidating looking, once you hear the bill to repair the thing most people want to let them go.

i have another of gm's dohc wonders. the quad 4. most people run the other way when you mention this motor. i have the ho version 16valve with a stick in my grand am gt. i love the thing. i'm rebuilding that motor now. unfortuantely, same issue. headgasket or the legendary rod knock.

yet, after the rebuild, i'm not going to torture test the thing for the next 100,000 miles. i have to take care of it if it is to survive. gm has made some wonderful motors, but one has to understand the powerful engines are going to need some special tlc.

thanks again.......
