Cooling system maintenance

OK... I've got the Cadillac service manual in front of me. For draining the cooling system it lists a left and right block drain, a heater circuit , and the lower left hand radiator drain, which is the only one I have seen anyone write about.

If I need to drain them all, where are they at. Is there a location diagram? Also, the manual says to put the pellets in the surge tank, contrary to most post advice.

What gives?

Thanks

Kent

Just pull the lower radaitor hose off to drain system, the take the upper lose from the waterpump outlet insert crushed pellets here and add the fluid when this fills then reconnect the hose and the top off to with 1 inch of the top of the surge tank.

Also leave the top of the surge tank start the engine and slowly rev up to 4k 2 or 3 time to purge the air from the system.

Not quite sure which service manual you're looking at but mine doesn't say to add any pellets to the surge tank.

Here's what it says:

12: After system has cooled sufficiently, add (3) three cooling system pellets P/N 3634621 and add sufficient coolant to the surge tank in order to bring the level slightly above the weld line visible inside the bottle.

Hmmm, I guess it could be misconstrued that you add it to the surge tank, but I pull off the rad hose closest to the water pump or thermostat and crush 3 and add it to that hose. If you want to use all 6 it won't hurt the engine.

The only thing I would add to buckley's reply is that if you are using pellets, they really don't need to be crushed if you are dropping them in the hose. Crushing them is meant for the radiator as there is not enough room to stuff them in whole. They will disintigrate quickly when wet (much easier). Also when I did mine I was unable to get near the lower radiator hose at the radiator. I removed it at the engine so there was some residual coolant still in the lower portion of the radiator. I just reversed the flow on my shop vac and put the nozzle in the surge tank and sealed it with my hand. That worked well to blow out most of the residual coolant.
