MAC
Yesterday I tried to replace the right axle but once again I could not get it out of the trans. When I disconnected the strut from the ball joint and outer tie rod, I noticed the strut (which was hanging freely) was torqued. In other words, once I disconnected the tie rod and ball joint and it was hanging free it twisted clockwise by itself from the 9 o'clock to 11 o'clock position. I'm not sure if the strut should have this kind of torque on it or whether this indicates that there is something wrong with the spring or strut itself. When I put it all back together, I had to twist the strut around to line up with the outer tie rod. Why would a free-hanging strut be torqued if there is an upper bearing. I hear squeaking when turning which sounds like the spring. However, I am still not able to determine what the problem is.
BodybyFisher
Did you have the struts replaced? There is an index point for the strut, spring and seat, if that index point is not adheared to I can see that happening, if you look in your manual, you can see the proper alignment of the strut, spring and seat Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
MAC
When I replaced the strut mount and bearing I made sure the spring was seated correctly. As you know, the spring can only be positioned one way in the spring seat because it's made in such a way that it's self-explanitory. I also made a note of the strut position before I removed it. When reassembling the spring on the strut, the spring is placed on the lower strut plate/mount first and then positioned in the upper plate/mount. Since the spring is not torqued when positioned on the strut, I would think that it shouldn't be torqued once the strut is bolted on. Also, shouldn't I be able to turn a free-hanging strut manually where it will not spring back on me if I should let it go?
