STARTING PROBLEMS

Xtreme

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

I'm a new member here, and hopefully a long term one. :)

Anywho, I have just encountered my first problem with my newly acquired 2001 Cadillac Seville STS.

Starting about a month ago, when I would go to start it, I would put the key in the ignition, turn it, and it wont start.

When I have the key cranked over to start it, the dash lights go off, and the accessories go off as well such as the radio and heater.

It can take anywhere between 1 try (on the first try) or 50 tries (sitting there forever trying to start the car, making me late for work).

I initially thought it was an issue with the key, because if I take the key in my hand and shake it, it sounds like something small is rattling around inside.

Reason why I think it may not be the key, is because the previous owner of the car called me up last night, and gave me the other key that he had found. It does the same rattling thing inside.

I tried the newly acquired key, and it still does the same starting problem.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

It's not so 'ballin getting in a Cadillac, and having to sit there for 10 minutes trying to make it start!!!! :)

Thanks in advance!

-Shawn K.

This sounds like a classic dirty positive battery connection. There are two cables that connect there, pull the red insulator off and clean it good with battery terminal spray or baking soda and water. Also clean the negative cable. Make sure that when you tighten the cables they are in fact tight. Watch how you take the positive cable apart and put it back the same way, there is a lead lug in there that you must get clean, Mike

Wow, thanks!

I will try this right after work in 2 hours!

Hahaha, yeah, I'm working right now.

I a salesman at an electronics store, and there are 5 of us working right now.

We haven't seen a customer come through the door for about 2 hours now... OMG.

I guess it's because of halloween, and everyone trick or treating and handing out candy.

By the way NEVER EVER remove the positive cable WITHOUT removing the NEGATIVE cable first, you can get burned badly if you contact it with tools, rings, etc...

Also, make sure your radio and key are turned off before you mess with the battery.

We have a lot that we can tell you about regarding your car, keep coming back, you have an on board diagnostic computer that will allow your engine to tell you what is wrong with it, in effect, your engine will help you to repair it
