4pursells
The engine on my 92 sts runs fine until accelerated or revved up, when at that point there is an occational banging in the engine as it is idling down. After that, it will idle normally again. Could it be a rod or piston that might go---I`m concerned!
Ranger
do an archive search for "main bearing thump". That may answer your question and ease your mind.

Dan
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say maybe a bad water pump. When it goes bad the pulley will begin to make a banging sound. Check your engine and see exactly where the sound is coming from, that will tell you what the answer is for sure.
Dusty
I remember a 4.9 doing something similar. I drove it and thought it was really a knocking under the hood, yet the engine ran so beautifully. I ended up being a bad doughnut gasket for the exhaust system. It was pretty hard to figure out, but it was a simple repair!
