2001 Deville diagnostic codes

Hi all,

I have an 01 DTS that has ben giving me some steering diag. codes for about 2 months - C 12887 and 1288. This says Steering Sensor Rate Malfunction and Steering Sensor Circuit Malf. The car seems to runs and steer perfectly fine. The codes always come up as history. I have cleared the codes (just did it today) but as soon as I shut the car off, restart and drive for a mile or two the Check Stability System warning come on and the same 2 codes are right back but still say history. Any ideas about why this is happening and where is the sensor. IF I continue to ignore wil I be making more problems for myself down the road. Any thought, advice appreciated

Thanks,

Fran

The Check Stability System warning is fairly common issue.

I had the same problem on my 04 Deville.

I ignored it until it became annoying. The dealer changed the

steering position sensors to correct.

I heard someone else say the sensitivity can

be lowered per a TSB, but I can't confirm that.

The steering angle and steering rate sensors are part of Stabilitrak -- GM's electronic stability control, not part of the steering system. Stabilitrak, although integrated with ABS and traction control, cannot be turned off like traction control can.

Recent studies show that electronic stability control saves more lives per passenger mile than air bags and seat belts combined. The NHTSB is looking at making electronic stability control mandatory on all cars sold in the USA. I would get it fixed ASAP.

Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars.

Thanaks Jasper,

Approx. what was the cost of the repair and/or how long did it take??

Any idea where the steering sensors are located??
