friesianlover87
Hey everyone, having some issues with my 93' STS. Whenever I drive for about 10 minutes and get up to 90km the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on, now I've checked for codes but theres nothing other than A048-history which has always been on because I dont have working air conditioning, but I'm sure thats not why the service engine soon light is coming up. I just had an oil change done, I'm starting to think maybe they tampered with my car some how...?? Any idea's why it needs "servicing" ? growe3
Check the oil level with the dipstick. It should be about half way into the knurled index. The people who did the oil change may not have realized that the Northstar takes 7 1/2 quarts. -George Drive'em like you own 'em. - ....................04 DTS............................ BodybyFisher
George is that what the 93 does when the oil is low, set off the service engine soon light? growe3
George is that what the 93 does when the oil is low, set off the service engine soon light? Yes, it has. The one time it got that low, the oil level indicator was also on. It is possible that the Oil Level Switch is not working, or has been disconnected accidentally. It is easy to check the oil, and eliminate it from a check list. As it was noted that the oil was just serviced, the oil level would be the first thing I would check; many places still do not realize that the Northstar takes so much oil to fill it. It may also be overfull, and setting a SES. As I have never done that, I am not sure if it would. Next of course is to visually check the engine compartment to see in anything looks out of place, and then under the car. The SES may just be a coincidence or ? As usual, viewing any PCM error codes, and the PCM Data Output, would help diagnose the problem. -George Drive'em like you own 'em. - ....................04 DTS............................ BodybyFisher
Interesting I did not know that Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
friesianlover87
Ok, I cleared the code last night and again SES came on today, I checked for codes and got a new one P013.. I have seen that code a couple months ago, if I remember correctly it has something to do with an oxygen sensor? I should note here that when I got my car , the catalytic converter was messed up and my mechanic decided to just gut it. Would I still then need to replace the oxygen sensor? ....I have been needing to put way more gas in everyday, I know prices are bad but could this have to do with the sensor? BodybyFisher
P013 (E013) .......................................... Right Oxygen Sensor Not Ready Check the connection at the O2 sensor if its ok, you may need to replace it, and yes, it will cause increased gas consumption Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
friesianlover87
Ok... for someone who's not too "car savvy" - could you decribe where this will be located? Or should I bring it somewhere to be checked out.
BodybyFisher
I believe this is located in the rear bank, the O2 sensor is screwed into the exhaust manifold. I never changed an O2 sensor on a 4.9, someone will chime in and give their actual experience Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
growe3
The rear oxygen sensor is a royal pain to R&R. It is on top of the rear exhaust manifold. Laying on top of the cool engine, and looking down the rear of the engine, it will be barely visible. I ended up lowering the engine cradle to get better access from underneath. They usually are stuck pretty good. Don't try to loosen the sensor on a cold engine, let it warm up a couple of minutes first. Please see this link for image and information 02 Sensor Information For this engine to run right you really need to get the catalytic converter replaced, and this 02 sensor. The converters for these engine are an excellent design, and do not hamper the performance. With everything working together you should expect about 21 MPG average at 70 MPH plus/minus. At 70 + MPH about 19.5 MPG. In town driving closer to 17 MPG. -George Drive'em like you own 'em. - ....................04 DTS............................ friesianlover87
Any idea of the cost of a new converter? Will it wreck my car to keep going without one? I'm guessing I will need to do a bit of saving for this as I am on a tight budget :-)

friesianlover87
I called a local mechanic shop and asked about the o2 sensor, he said it would cost probably 50$ for it and probably another 100$ to pull the codes from the car..... Is there more codes other than the ones I saw? Is there a way to do this on my own? Sounds like he's trying to charge me for something I can easily do..
