Changed Trans Fluid

MAC

Recommended Posts

I pumped out 8 quarts of trans fluid through the upper radiator transaxle fluid cooling line. I removed the air box so I would have enough room to pour the trans fluid. I used a 3/8 x 3/8 brass fitting I purchased at Home Depot and connected about 5 feet of vinyl hose. To keep the hose stationary, I taped it to the bumper and the 14-quart bucket. I then started and let it idle in Park until it looked like 4 quarts of fluid was pumped out. I shut the engine, refilled, and pump out another 4 quarts. The fitting was not a perfect fit but the threads pitch was the same. I managed to start the fitting and turn it about 1/2-turn, which was good enough. Though I didn't replace all of the fluid I figure when spring arrives I can do the job again. I brought the waste fluid to my local Advance Auto Parts store. Best of all there was no mess.

You're insane! You cant let the tranny get 4-quarts low with the tourque converter spinning!

All it takes is a few seconds of cavitation and you'll be in for a several thousand dollar repair.. which you won't notice until the next time you try doing 70 with your family in the car on the way to the beach!

Hope you got lucky!

Cool Mac... Mac how long did it take to pump out 8 quarts?

We have had this dicussion over and over. When the car is in park doing this is fine, many of us have done this. It was suggested also by the guru.. Its a clean and fast way of changing your fluid. Dropping the pan only can get rid of so much, pumping it out like this gets more junk out of your tranny, dropping the pan is a huge dirty job...

DON'T Put it in DRIVE while doing this obviously...

See this link, see post #14, I had this fitting made up for the task:

LOL the way he did it is exact how most mechanics and dealerships will tell you it should be done... Don't tell us that you would recommend a flush.

The only thing he could have done to make this job "perfect" would have been to remove the pan after the 4 quart pump and clean the black crud out of the bottom of the pan. and then refill.

Pump it all out next time, MAC.

I have a hose long enough that I can sit in the driver's seat and kill the engine the second it stops pumping fluid.

I bought 4 gallons of fluid for a full change. I'll do the job this weekend. I thought about using a long hose like you did but I figured less hose, less mess.
