Spurlee
Well, this morning there was a nice pool of coolant, probably 1/2 cup or so under the car. That would explain the continued howling from my 1996 El Dorado (120,000 mi.). I checked this forum and found some threads that have me thinking that changing the water pump is a pretty easy task. http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...9&hl=water+pump There's mention of putting some sort of leak stop tabs in the upper hose - I'm not real big on adding stuff like that - it is advised? $65 for a new pump, and a top up of anti-freeze and I'm good to go I hope. I'm getting the loaner tool from Auto Zone to use. All I have to do is make it 150 miles back home. I'll report back Monday. Ranger
Yes, it's pretty easy. I have never had to do it but as I recall from some posts, there is an alignment tab or something like that so be carefull wich way it goes in. Also, remember, it is not threaded, but cam locked so only about 1/8 - 1/4 turn clockwise to loosen and 1/8 - 1/4 counter clockwise to tighten it. Get the tabs, Barsleaks product "HDC" from Walmart and put them in the hose, not the surge tank. They are factory recommended so they won't hurt anything. They'll just make the coolant look rusty. Don't let that worry you.
Spurlee
Ranger: What a delightful water pump change - it took me less than an hour with hardly a mess. I just got your message about the tabs, so I'll have to add them later. No leaks though. Unfortunately, the squeal/whine is still with me - even after replacing the tensioner, idler and A/C compressor. P/S pump or Alternator is only alternatives...I've never had a P/S pump go bad, I'll look here for advice... BodybyFisher
Have you tried listening to the accessories with a scope or a 3/4" hose to isolate the noise? Spurlee
Have you tried listening to the accessories with a scope or a 3/4" hose to isolate the noise? Yes, I did that originally and several times since and even has other gear heads listen - no real clear opinion. I guess it's not bad enough to really stick out. Maybe I shouldn't worry. It's a fleeting sound more like a grinding sound than a whine now, it's been quiet for about 150 miles now, but it could start up at any time. It typically begins at first start and at idle - of course, that's when I'm looking/listening - and I can quiet it by raising the RPM sometimes. Not related to the cycling of the A/C and definately on that side of the engine. Time will tell. BodybyFisher
For the hell of it you can by pass your AC compressor us the 6K739 belt for the purpose and you can eliminate the hub bearing in the compressor. Do a search under eliminating the compressor for the short belt part number. If you catch the hub bearing early you won't have to replace the compressor.. Mike\\ I have a 96 also, and mine self destructed over about a 2 year period, the whine drove me crazy Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

I'm not worried about getting stranded and no one else drives the thing. If I get a few of years out of it I'll be happy. It might clear up when the weather warms a bit. I replaced the FPR even though it wasn't siptting fuel - what a great improvement. Starts beautifully. I got it for $50 bucks at Rock Auto.
