Removing the alternator..... do I really have to yank the radiator?

Recommended Posts

So my Cad has been sitting up for a while with a bum alternator.

Finally got a new Delco one and decided to tackle it myself.

Removed the 2 BIG bolts on top and bottom, and the middle bolt.

Removed the ground and the wire connector.

There's nothing holding it on besides the belt. It does NOT move!

How am I getting this baby outta there?

There's no room to wiggle it out.

Do I really have to remove the radiator?

I need the 411 here from someone who's done this.

Thanks in advance Caddy guys!

With your user name being what it is I'd have to be hard pressed. I, however, do find it entertaining.

The definition of an enthusiast is "a person filled with enthusiasm" or " one who is ardently attached to a cause, object, or pursuit." Then there is my personal favorite "one who tends to become ardently absorbed in an interest." I would call the last one fanatic, bordering on unhealthy. I think I'd rather be an enthusiast as opposed to a fanatic.

You do not need to remove the radiator, but be careful to not damage it when removing the alternator, the fins crush easily.

I have copied two pages that show how to remove the alternator. Note that there are four (4) bolts that hold the alternator in place.

Follow the directions IN ORDER.

The alternator comes out from the bottom of the engine compartment.

Both fans must be removed to have room to access the bolted areas.

The upper transmission line must be removed, or the right fan cannot removed. Be sure to replace the fan, before reconnecting the upper transmission line.

I have placed a couple of images, from my manual, on my web storage. Please see link below to access the images.

I always put a piece of cardboard or thin plywood behind the radiator when replacing the alternator on a N* Caddy. It accomplishes two things, first it protects the radiator from getting crushed fins and possibly a leak. Second, it keeps the fins from acting like a cheese grater on your knuckles!

So I finally get it all done. THAT WAS NOT FUN!!!

The top bolt was easy.

The botton bolt was a MAJOR PIA!!

The middle bolt was fairly easy.

The inner middle bolt was TERRIBLE!

Passenger side fan had to come out.

Right support off.

Temp. sensor off.

Battery cables pulled.

Undercarriage plate removed.

Getting it out of the serpentine belt was tough.

Hardest part was dropping it throught the bottom undercarriage!! It's a ridiculous fit. You have to remove a plate that opens up a hole to get it through. Much like a Rubix cube it only goes one way to solve it. Man it was murder!

Putting the new one back in was somewhat easy.

Popping the serpentine back on wasn't fun and took some HULK strength.

Bolting it back in was easier cause I knew the drill.

All in all I saved some cash, drank a 6 pack, and learned a great deal. Satisfaction. I won't be very happy if I have to do this again anytime soon.

Those service book instructions that George posted REALLY helped.

From what you typed, you should have taken the Serp belt off altogether and put it on when you were done...

Didn't want to create more work for myself.

It's done.

Done right, and done for online parts costs only!

Now I have 14.4 volts at start-up.

After driving around with radio, lights, heater etc., it settles around 13.7.

Sounds about right, doesn't it??

Man the alt. is in such a crappy place under the exhaust manifold.

Seems like there should be some sort of alt. heat shield to protect it.

Same for the A/C compressor.

Both are subjected to extreme temps.

At least I know I'm good for another 2 years.

Las Vegas summer temps really kill alternators, batteries, and A/C compressors.
