remote car starter

Has anyone had any problems with their electronics after they had a remote car starter installed? I just bought one for the girlfriend and she absolutely loves it, and with the winter we've had here I'm almost breaking down and thinking about one for the STS.

I've always been hesitant about these things since you have to tap into wires etc.

Anyone else's experience would be appreciated.

I have had several remote starts on cars. My first car 96 chevy corsica had a Viper 550 remote start/alarm. I like it a lot, but the only thing was, if you are inside, say a classroom or at work and you can't see your car, you couldn't tell if your car started or not. After i sold that car and bought my 98 STS, i didn't have the money to put one on right away. I finally got on installed about 2 years ago.

It's the Compustar 2WSSR. www.compustar.org It's a remote start/alarm. It has a 1 mile range, and pages you back when your car starts. They were the first company to have a remote with an LCD screen to tell you whats going on with your car. Viper and a couple of other company's now have 2-way remotes. I have had no electrical problem due to the install of the remote start.

Just reading through the posts and i thought i would add my two cents. A buddy of mine just put a remote starter in his 98 eldorado. NOthing but problems. Every time he starts the car with the remote starter, the horn starts going off and the lights flash. On top of that, none of the heating controls seemed to work without the key in the ignition, he started the car, let it warm up for 15 minutes in -20 degree weather, gets in the car and NO HEAT. Although the problems are now fixed and the remote starter is working good, this came at a price. Well over a thousand dollars after everything is said and done.

A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...BUT, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "darn...that was fun!"

My 2 cents as well

I had asked a Performance shop about installing them and they said that on top of the purchase price of the remote start there was another $60 part that pluged inline that would solve the problem with the security system.

I had a remote starter installed in all 3 cars... and only $125 /each

No problems whatsoever. Also came with a LIFETIME warranty -- AND when I get a new vehicle, they take it out of my old one and put it in to the new one!! What a deal :)

If the horns go off and the heat doesn't work that starter was obviously installed incorrectly. I installed my own and it works fine, the only problem I had was that the installation documentation had the incorrect wire labeling, I figured it out after a lot of work.

WOW, only $125 each.

Where and when was this super deal, (if you don't mind)?

Add power to leave problems behind. Most braking is just - poor planning.

It's a place called Precision Auto - place in Niagara Falls NY --about 15 mins. from my house.

I guess the guy likes me - because he always seems to fit me in right then and there, while at the exact same time, he tells other people they need an appointment. He installed a remote starter AND a JVC cd player in under an hour and a half.. Now, that was impressive!

I had a Cheap "Vallet" brand one in my 96 Deville. Carried a second remote that only started the car, because i didnt want best buy to mess up my keyless. or to lose my gas door button.

Worked great, If i could hear it, i could tell it started. (Funny how one's ear can become trained to pick out the sound of their engine starting) Otherwise the Power antena raising would give it away.

I didnt like to start it in bad areas (Where antenas had been ripped of other cars)

I have one in my 99Grand Prix right now.

Also works great.

Funny Differnce:

In the Deville, you start the car, everything would come on (including the raido) just like i started the car.

In The Pontiac, the radio will NOT come on untill i turn the key. Its odd, but kind of nice, because then i dont lose my place in my song on the changer.

Crazy.

Pre-heated seats are GREAT, in this cold COLD MN winter.

Yes, on 96 and up the RKE is heavily integrated into the car. You loose a lot of features if you don't use it.

There is a new Code Alarm system that use a little remote with only a start button. Made to be used with the OEM remote. That is the way I went. CA420

Also if installing a remote there is a new item from Trilogix that intetegrtaes the aftermarket unit to your car. It works real nice and is a one wire hookup. Does Transponder key bypass, OEM disarm, rearm, RAP control. The most important features for remote start. If you are doing a remote start with keyless it also does lock, unlock, horn. All with one wire to the OBDII data interface (96 up). Real nice. Saved me hours of fishing a wire to the door panel. GMDLBP, www.12voltshop.com. Might have to call them as it is brand new.
