kallsop
The speedo is stuck at 0 mph and the tranny is stuck in 1st gear. Forgot what the codes are, but replacing the VSS was indicated. Looking at the service manual, the VSS sits on top of the tranny and is easy to replace. I have a new VSS in hand. With the hood open, all I see is huge Northstar. Can the VSS be replaced from the top side engine compartment without removing a whole bunch of stuff? Thx.
Ranger
Jack up the right side and let the suspension hang. Pull the right wheel and go in through the wheel well.
kallsop
I found it! The cable is off the VSS, now, what size bolt holds it in? I can barely touch the bolt and wonder how the heck I'll ever get this thing off. My large hands definitely don't help with this job.
Ranger
Don't hold me to it, but I think it is 10mm.
kallsop
Success! I found the one angle of attack where I was able to slip on a closed end 10mm wrench and get the bolt out. Now the speedo works again and the tranny shifts normally. I had to clear all codes before the cruise control would work, but that's working now too. Thanks for the help, it would have taken a lot longer without the advice. Don't hold me to it, but I think it is 10mm.
