TRANNY ??? WHINE

MOLLYHAM

Recommended Posts

I need some help from you guys out there that are of Cadillac knowledgeables.

I am considering purchasing a 1993 Deville. Unfortunately, the car has made

the rounds through the used car dealers/auctions and I can't get much reliable

history on the car. The car is clean (not just from detailing), it has been well

kept it appears. It has 101K on the clock. The car makes a rather loud whine

that seems to be coming from the transmission. It is the loudest when the car

is idling in park. When you place the car in any gear the whine subsides for a

few seconds and then is as loud as it is when in park. When I take the car for

a drive I can usually hear the whine which speeds up as the rpms do. Occassionally, on a drive I do not hear the whine and it seems to be normal.

Give me your thougts please. Also, the "SERVICE SSS" light is on in the

information display. There is no owners manual to which I can refer. What

is "SSS" and what does this message indicate?

The SSS system is basically a computor that changes the struts from soft to firm ride depending on driving conditions. Additional diagnostics will be needed.

A whine as you describle is typically the front pump whinning from low pressure or air if I am not mistaken. A pressure test on the tranny would provide more info.

Have you performed the on-board diagnostic yet? To enter the built-in diagnostic service mode, press the OFF and WARMER buttons simultaneously and hold until all the segments on the display panel light up. If there are any engine or other trouble codes in memory, they will be displayed. Write them down and report them here and we will interpret them for you.

How much are you buying this car for? Mike

Thanks for a quick reply. I have followed your instruction to the best of my ability

on the on-board diagnostic. I get 8.8.8 then . .E then E52 then .7.0

This is new to me, so, I hope I wrote down the correct displays.

The SSS deal sounds like it needs the attention of a specialist.

I can buy the car for around $4k.

hard to tell from just being described as a whine...... maybe you can check the tranny fluid and see if it's fried or not, smell it, etc..

The fluid is at the proper level and is clean with no burn "fried" smell.

The whine sounds very much like a noisy alternator. I thought that was what it was at first. But the noise "whine" is definitely from the tranny.

Good, Try running the diagnostic again, and run it till you get the exact numbers. It should have said, E052 if I am not mistaken. E052 is just a PCM Memory reset, probably from the battery being disconnected.

That car has a 4.9 engine doen't it? Try again and see what you get let it run a few times.

If it is the same as the 91, SSS diagnosis requires that once you invoke the diagnostic through the ALDL connector you count lights on the CCR module to determine where you problem is, but that was CCR in 91, SSS in 94 may be different, maybe someone that has the service manual for the 93 can help with SSS, Mike

I dont know if it will be readable as I had to make it small but the following is the diagnostic procedure for the 91

WELL that is an entirely different story! Yes these cars can whine quite a bit. Without getting hurt take a 2 1/2 foot 3/4" hose and listen to the accessories and you should be able to localize the whine!

If it is in fact the tranny, maybe it makes sense to have a local tranny guy listen to it. Maybe someone here will chime in with the reasons a tranny whines. Mike
