INTAKE AND EXHAUST ON '97 SLS ----

Flyer

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I've just last weekend installed a K&N cone intake and Dynomax superturbos on my 1997 SLS. I also had them put in an exhaust dump, right behind the cat and resonator, so I can run open exhaust if I so choose.

Well the car ran much faster, and a bit louder with the mufflers, and a lot louder with the dump opened (but man it sounds mean). I never had raced my friend in his BMW M3 ('95) before this work, because I didn't think I'd stand a chance, as we've torn up the road in it together on many occasions and it is a bad *smurf* machine.

Well, I told him that I thought I may give him a decent run for his money at at 50 mph kick, as I felt the car pulled very hard in this range, and maybe I could keep up with him. So we went to the local deserted straightaway, and ran 'em about a dozen times. We ran from dead stop, rolling kick, 1rst gear kick, 2nd gear.... blah blah.

I literally could not believe the results. I won. Repeatedly. He won a couple, but it really seemed to hinge on whoever got the better start. The only area that his car demonstrated superiority was when we got to about 80mph, he would ever so slowly begin to pull away, and once I hit my 112 limiter, it was all over.

But even from a dead stop, my car was taking his!! I still can't believe that my car is that fast now.

Anyway, he has a very new appreciation for the Northstar that I never thought I could give him.

Outstanding Flyer! Better to let the machines do their own talking anyway! If you can you should post some pictures of your cone filter install.

Can you give me the part number of those Dynomax Super Turbos?

cetheri,

The dynomax mufflers can be purchased from Summit racing sup. They are a 2 in inlet and outlet with offset on one end and centered on other. It does not matter which is which because they are reversable. Call 'em up and get 'em for $35 each. It is worth it, I think. They are a universal muffler. Exhaust dump only about $25, well worth it too.

I tried to attach a picture of my homemade intake with K&N filter, let's see if it worked.

Here is a pic of the exhaust dump. I'm going to be adding an electric solenoid control to it soon, so I can hit a switch on the inside while I'm driving, and open the monster up.

  • 5 weeks later...

The case was really short, probably about 14", much shorter than the original. The exhaust dump is worth it based on the sound alone!! I love that loud muscle car sound, but I need to have some quiet time every now and then, like when I take my honey out on the town, or go cross country. But try revving that STS to 6700 RPM with the trans in 1rst, and you just feathering the throttle, with the dump open, aahhh....

The sound is killer... good medicine... trust me.

how well did it fit? if your stock case is 20'... and you installed a 14' ????

was there any noticeable difference in power?

thanks

For '95, the M3 coupe used a 3.0-liter 24-valve DOHC inline-six-cylinder engine. It produced 240 horses at 6000 rpm, with max torque coming in at 225 lb-ft at 4250.

1995 BMW M3:

0-60 = 6.2

1/4 Mile = 14.6

1995 BMW M3 Lightweight:

0-60 = 5.3

1/4 Mile = 13.9

The shorter case is no problem at all, he just put in a longer tube to make the difference. They look nicer too, with a clean metal appearance under the rear. What Q are you talking about Cadillac STS?

P.S. me and the BMW driver were not abusing our transmissions, if we had, I'll bet he would have jumped me quite hard. But we were just trying to get a feel for the power of the engines, we weren't trying to destroy our cars.

I cannot feel that much of a difference, but when racing there appears to be a little, very slight increase with the dump. The mufflers did help enough to feel a difference though.

MAC, I guarantee you that he wasn't posting those kind of numbers when we raced, like I said, he and I were not abusing the transmissions, or doing a lot of spinning on the tires.

naw i was asking about the case size...so now diff at all? do you think there would be a diff with a bigger size? I wont be keeping the stock piping anyways....upgrading to 2.5

what about your resinator??? Does my 94' have one you think? if i have it removed will it be louder...too loud...or doesnt matter???

called summit on the wye dump $25 and the superturbos $35 ea +shipping.

ordered electric solenoid online at pfyc.com for $147 +shipping.

Total: <$300 with installation.

If I had to do it over again and save some money, I would have just had the dump put in with the electric solenoid and not messed with the mufflers at all.

total: <$200 with installation

Yeah, factor in about $30/ea for installation of mufs, and cutout, and that's the deal.

Cadillac STS,

My '93 doesn't have a resonator, but my '97 does. Any thing that you take out of the exhaust line will increase exhaust noise volume. I like to refer to it as "sound" or "medicine" rather than "noise", but there are plenty of times when you don't want that "sound", like when escorting your honey around town, or when you are creeping in late, or when you are leaving the bars late at night and the cops are lookin' for the next victim. The dump and stock mufflers are really the way to go. That way you have the best of both worlds. Quiet as stock when you need to be, and grizzly when you want to be.
