seville 1996 transmission stuck in second gear

84 posts in this topic

@OldCadTech

I believe its 2 problems.  The EBCTM is causing a 2nd gear start and a second problem is causing the lack of 2-3 and 3-4.

I believe that if the EBCTM were fixed, it would have 1 and 2

Does that make sense?

It is possible that with the R&R of the tranny that the TC0073 set.

The plug needs reseating cleaning and all grounds need confirmation.

There are harness grounds that might have been left off or loose

I agree with you on both statements, more with the second statement than the first. I agree there are multiple problems, I also agree there are more than likely ground issue problems but there would have to be a shift solenoid code or valve problem for the PCM to restrict it to 2nd gear only. If he finds the paper with the code list it would help.

The EBTCM was inop long before the second gear only problem.

Are you mixing second gear start with second gear only?

Transmission A codes are the only ones that will PREVENT it from shifting. Second gear start is completely different. Simply turning on Trac Control will force a 2nd gear start but the trans will shift to 3rd, 4th & lockup.

Hi. Yes looks like I got it mix up. Sorry what is a transmission A code you mentioned?

Hi. Will provide codes tmrw. Transmission guy has got my notes.

Thx for patience

There are 4 transmission DTC type "A" codes that the PCM's algorithm determines are serious enough to prevent further damage to transmission and restricts 2nd gear only.

P0751 - 1-2 shift solenoid valve performance

P0753 - 1-2 shift solenoid circuit electrical

P0756 - 2-3 shift solenoid valve performance

P0758 - 2-3 shift solenoid circuit electrical

Clear. The only transmission code remaining is P0751. Apart from that are TC related 0027 and 0073. Rest of it is my notes at transmission shop. The thing is that the guy has done a research on that transmission and he is also suggesting that EBCTM unit is delt with first to see how transmission reacts after that. The problem here in Europe is we dont have sufficient testing equpiment for GM cars of that age 1996 model so we have to go step by step. I have fluid flow charts printed out for him so hopefully we will find out what to do next.

To be complete, there is ONE more "A" code,

P1860 - TCC pulse Width modulation solenoid circuit electrical

It inhibits TCC lockup and if trans is in hot mode it will prevent 4th gear.

Is the transmission guy in Europe too?

Are you and the car in Europe?

Is it a right hand drive import model?

It is japanese export that ended up in europe. It is a left hand drive like in the US.

The reason I ask its origin and requested the vin is the GM export Seville was different. I don't know about the trans codes etc, I'm thinking those would be the same but they were a different beast in a lot of ways.  @Logan is wayy more familiar with the differences than I am

If I was working on this vehicle in 1996 the first thing I would do is pull the 1-2 solenoid and shift valve.

The transmission really doesn't care if the ABS/Traction Control is working or not....

I will provide VIN tmrw. Car is at the shop. You are right I will speak to transmission guy and we ll go for lower valve body. Solenoids are fine so we check again valves and springs.

Appreciate that. By the way car is located in Slovakia central Europe. Some of you NHL fans might heard of Marian Hossa from Chicago or Marian Gaborik from Los Angeles Kings. Also Zdeno Chara from Boston Bruins.

I was wrong, the VIN doesn't designate if it was an export. I was thinking the plant code was different.

Then I thought maybe it was an RPO code so I went through the RPO codes and found no designation there either, other than the right hand drive code.

We'll have to wait and see if @Logan chimes in.

0Line pressure test update: minimum and maximum line pressure as listed in GM manual within required limits in Drive Park Reverse and Neutral.

List of codes available: TC0027. TC0073. P0741. AC1340 and codes involving memory alive.... No codes for shift solenoids.

Sonnax company is asking for ridiculous money just for tool set in order to install valve body rebuild kit so better choice is going for a rebuilt lower valve body unit with guarantee for 239$.

When changed along with EBCTM unit will let you about car's behaviour. Thx for help on this so far.
