95 STS Leather Interior

When I bought my 95 STS about 2 months ago there was a worn spot (soon to become a tear) on the driver's seat that I wanted to fix. I contacted the trim shop that does all the leather work for the local dealership and had him replace the worn section. When he looked at my interior he was surprised by the fact that the seats were all leather, even the sides and back. He said he had never seen a Caddy that didn't have some vinyl. Since he has worked on Caddys for years you would think he would know. I have several friends with Caddys and they thougt theirs were all leather only to find out that the side pieces were vinyl (93 SLS and 92 Sedan Deville) I checked my other 95 Sedan Deville (now sold) and sure enough the sides were vinyl. I was just wondering if anyone else had all leather seats, and if not, why would this particular car be all leather?

A few years ago, GM got in a spot of trouble because they were advertising "leather seating" and the entire seat was not leather. They changed that to "Leather in the seating areas." My understanding was that they put leather where it actually touched the passenger and vinyl on the sides of the seat and backrest where it did not. Quality household furniture is also often made the same way.

Both my 93 STS and my current 2000 STS have leather on the seat and on the backrests but the sides of both are vinyl. I have a friend who had a 95 Concours and 1999 DeVille Delegance and they were both made the same way. I have never seen an all-leather seat.

They've done an excellent job of matching and it's very hard to tell the vinyl from the leather unless you can see the back of it.

You are certainly right. It is very difficult to tell the difference. The guy who did my replacement gave me a leather and vinyl sample and a couple of the guys I showed them to picked the vinyl as being leather.

Regardless, the seats in my 95 STS were all leather. Not that it makes it any better, it's just interesting that some rolled off the line with all leather while the standard seems to be as you said -- leather on the seating area and vinyl on the rest. Makes you wonder why?

Because of the cost and the perfect vinyl match, I had him put vinyl on the lower (non-seating area) part of the driver's seat and on the side part that faces the door (again, non-seating area). Leather was used on that part of the seating area that he replaced. Looks great and matches the rest of the car perfectly.
