Ed Hall
I'm having a problem keeping the compressor clutch fuse alive. The last fuse only lasted several minutes with the A/C turned on. Without the A/C on, the fuse doesn't burn out. This A/C has never been worked on with the exception of adding a pound of R-12 last summer.
BodybyFisher
Ed, on my 96, when the hub bearing overheated the heat shorted out the clutch windings and my fuse blew repeatedly. You might be able to put an ohm meter on your clutch windings (connector for the clutch) to measure resistance, send JimD an email, he may know how you can determine if your clutch is shorted, I think he worked with coils. Pull your serp belt off and see if your clutch has any play and if the bearing feels rough my guess is that your hub bearing is overheating. If I am not mistaken, coils have a finite life span and this might just be the clutch coil giving up the ghost Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Ed Hall
Scotty, thanks for your response. I'll try what you said and reply back. Is it possible to replace the bearings and coil or do I need a new/rebuilt compressor?
KHE
Check the wiring to the clutch - it may have frayed and is shorting out against metal or itself. Also, the diode that is across the clutch harness terminals may be shorted out causing the fuse to blow. Logan
If the coil is bad. The good news is both the coil and clutch can be changed without touching the freon. This is...on that version of compressor. MAC
I just ordered a clutch coil for my A/C at Rockauto--total $45.58, including shipping. My compressor keeps blowing the 10amp fuse and the coil is cracked. I hope it's an easy job. I'll have to rent a coil puller/installer. Also, the GM Service Manual says to stake the coil at three places and 120 degrees apart. I'll buy a punch to stake the coil. As long as I have my A/C this summer I'll be happy.
