stupid question about oil

As some of you may rememebr I bought a 2005 SRX in January of this year. Question, do they ship with sythetic oil? Should I use sythentic oil? Does it matter? Someone (on another forum) said if the oil cap says Mobil1 on it it shipped with sythetic oil and thats what you use, if it does not it uses regular oil. Mine says Mobil1 on the oil cap. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I've always owned older cars so this has never been an issue for me.

Thanks!

Yes, the 3.6L DOHV VVT's are shipping with Mobil 1 5W30. I recommend you stay with Mobil 1. I found the CTS at least is very easy to change the oil in yourself.

In this case it does matter a bit, as the oil specification for the engine is fairly tight. Mobil 1 does meet the requirements; I am not sure which other oils do as well.

I change mine on the oil life monitor recommendation, as suggested in the manual, so first change was at 8k miles or so; second oil change was at 16k or so.

FAIRFAX, Virginia (October 27, 2003) - ExxonMobil today announced that Mobil 1 with SuperSyn with anti-wear technology, the world's leading synthetic motor oil, has been selected as original equipment (factory fill) in Cadillac's newest luxury sedan and utility vehicle. The new 2004 Cadillac CTS luxury performance sedans and SRX medium luxury utility vehicles are factory filled with Mobil 1 5W-30.

"The Cadillac name is recognized for quality and high-performance, and we are pleased that General Motors has once again selected Mobil 1 as original equipment in its newest automobiles," said Jeff Martin, manager original equipment manufacturer business, ExxonMobil Lubricants & Specialties. "The fact that General Motors has again chosen Mobil 1 illustrates their belief that Mobil 1 provides outstanding protection and engine performance that vehicles of this caliber deserve."

Mobil 1 5W-30 is also the factory fill motor oil in the 2003 Cadillac XLR and a number of other high-performance vehicles, including the Chevrolet Corvette, Mercedes-Benz AMG, Dodge Viper, all Porsche models, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, Ford Mustang Cobra R, and Aston Martin models. All new Mercedes-Benz vehicles sold in the U.S. are equipped with an engine decal approving Mobil 1. ExxonMobil engineers recommend that consumers follow the viscosity grade and API service category recommendations in their vehicle owners' manuals.

If it has VVT as Bruce indicated, then you need to stick with synthetic. Your owners manual should confirm it, but I suspect "Mobil 1" on the cap is not just advertizing paid for by Mobil. It is a blatant reminder of what GM wants you to use.

yup mine has the V6 VVT (same engine as the CTS). I have free oil changes for the life of my car, now I just have to make sure the (chevy) dealer puts the right stuff in....hope that doesn't become an issue. They also gave me free tires for life as long as I have them rotated once a year by them and pay for the rotation, the only problem there is that the SRX has bigger wheels in the rear and the manual states NOT to have the tires rotated - not even side to side. So I need to call down there and see what they have to say about how that effects their free tires for life program....

Thanks for the input!
