MAC
I think my right side CV joint may be worn. When I start up and put my Eldorado in drive I hear a popping sound (sometimes a double pop); when I shift to reverse the same thing. So, while stationary with foot on the brake and shifting back and forth from drive to reverse I hear popping. I replaced the lower ball joints last year with Moog. But, I guess it could again be ball joints again. Also, after shifting to drive and accelerating, I hear the popping. Yesterday, while driving I heard a ticking sound coming from the right, which became faster as I accelerated. But this morning I didn’t hear it. Does this sound like it could be the CV half-shaft? BodybyFisher
Difficult to say, try standing by the front wheels when someone varies the gear selector from R to N to D and watch the wheel, I have seen bad axle sort of cause the wheel to jump or move abruptly. This could also be an engine mount or dog bone. MAC
Thanks for the input. I just replaced the front engine mount last month and both torque struts last week. Today, I check for engine hop and all looks fine. The popping is pronounced and it's occurring on a regular basis whether shifting or driving. When I accelerate, I hear a pop then another pop as more and more torque is applied. When decelerating, I will also hear the pop. Years ago, I owned Datsun Z cars (two 240Z & two 260Z). When the universal joints would wear out, I would hear a similar popping sound that I'm hearing now. I can buy a new (not rebuilt) half-shaft for $70 from AutopartsGiant.com. On the other hand, I'm also suspicious of the lower ball joint(s); however, I replaced both with Moogs' last year. I’ll have to ask my brother-in-law for help trying to figure out what’s going on. He can shift and I’ll look to see if I can spot anything. Otherwise, I think I’ll buy the half-shaft and two ACDelco ball joints.
Ranger
A "popping" sound is often the discriptiion given when CV joints go, thoug usually in turns as I recall.
BodybyFisher
I wouldnt replace the ball joints, Moog is a good brand, and yours are only one year old. The Popping confused me, I associated clicking with bad CV joints, but Ranger may have a point that this is your CV axles. I had not realized you replaced engine mounts and dog bones Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
