We should have had him change it when he put the motor in.

I hope that was the smell. Just funny we couldn't see it leak until he changed coolant then it leaks like crazy.

Cooling system leaks (end tanks, water pump seal, hose connections, and reservoir tank) can tend to only show themselves when the cooling system is under pressure. The leak is small, when coolant under pressure comes out through a crack it will immediately vaporize and you will smell it but not see it... Its possible that the cooling supplement was masking the seal leak and when you drained the coolant, the leak showed itself... Don't forget to use the supplement again if you empty the cooling system to do the pump.

There is a bars leak that is exactly the same as the GM supplement, if that is what you find, its fine.

See this link for a picture of the Bars leak I am speaking of:

That guy Scotty is a wealth of information

Be sure to put the coolant pellets in the lower radiator hose while the system is drained. Do not put them in the surge tank.

Linda,

The Barleaks powdered stuff from Walmart is simply crushed tabs. You can use that. The product code is G12BP, the tabs are HDC. Both are the exact same thing as the dealer supplies. Barsleaks makes them for GM.

Water pump installed and we are overheating!! What did we do wrong!

Probobly Nothing. Make sure that the system is full of antifreeze!

I had nothing but problems trying to get air out of the system.

Make sure that the little hose that goes into the surge tank has fluid going through it, this is your air purge line and it could be clogged.

As up@ng said, check the purge line. It is the 3/8" line that runs from the water pump to the surge tank. If it is clogged, it can't purge air from the system and you'll overheat. Pull the line off at the tank. There should be coolant flow. If not. find and clear the obstruction.

It turned out to be the thermostat. Why & how did it go bad at the same time as the water pump when we changed the coolant?! What luck we have.

We did need to add more coolant too. After adding more and changing the thermostat it seems to be fine. I drove it 60 miles this evening and took it up and traded my son cars. He will be driving it home later and we will see how it does for him.

I told my husband that the water pump would probably be the easiest he had ever changed. He said it was, but the stupid thing overheating even after the water pump change was more stressful.

He took the whole thing off again before he figured out the thermostat was bad.

He always hates it when I say it will be easy. It always turns out to be the biggest pain in the you know what. I wish I would learn not to say it will be easy!!

The pump didn't come with the seal on the housing and I had to go to the Cadillac dealer to pick up that today also.

I think I have been to 4 parts departments today. I was picking up parts for the 95 and the 97. They think I am in the business of repairing cars. I walk in and tell them what I want and they want to charge it to some business account and I say I don't have an account, I will pay for it myself. It is kind of funny.

May be I need to set up a business account. lol!

Always KNOCK ON WOOD!

Glad you got it straightened out... that IS very weird that your thermostat decided to crap out when you changed the water pump... amazing... sounds like you are doing good now... Mike

Glad you got it fixed and it was a cheap, easy fix, even if it was a bit frustrating. As to "Why & how did it go bad at the same time as the water pump", sometimes "stuff" happens.

Sounds to me like the overheating was always the thermostat mainly, but the water pump was a problem. It never hurts to change a water pump.

One thing that you need to watch is the amount of anti-freeze. The fact that you had to add more and more coolant and it stopped overheating tells me that it was topped off with less than 50% anti-freeze. The Northstar (and probalby most other engines) will boil off hot spots in the head during normal operation if your coolant is less than 50% ant-freeze. The thermostat is always opening and closing in normal operation. The steam bubbles will collect under the thermostat when it is closed and stop it from opening for a minute or two and you will have a temperature spike -- the car will overheat.

You probably whould have your system pressure checked at a radiator shop. Use the pellets first. I say this because I had a seepage leak in the metal heater hoses in my car once.

Linda...a P0420 usually means the converter is toast...I say that since you mentioned the old engine was losing anti-freeze so bad,it was coming out the tailpipes. It takes a good while to blow all the anti-freeze out of the exhaust system, after you replaced the engine. As for the t-stat crapping out after the pump replacement,I have had that happen several times after a cooling system repair. It's a luck of the draw!

I think she solved the overheating problem and the coolant loss.
