more waterpump woes

This waterpump is going to be the end of me. I got the old one out and am about to put the new one in, but it won't stay in place when I put the tool on. As soon as I put the tool on, it moves and the I have to take off the tool, readjust the pump to where it supposed to be and then put the tool back on and it moves again. What the heck???

Any tricks to this or what? I'm starting to go crazy here, as I've been at it for almost two hours. I even tried putting the belt on first, but it still won't go.

Maybe the knubby on the end of my 1/2" breaker bar is not long enough, if that makes sense. I can see if it was longer that I would be able to push on the pump itself keeping it in place.........

HELP!

Ken D,

I would look at the pump and the tabs that hold it. When I did mine, was not problem. Took all of 10 seconds. Remember, it goes in counter clock wise.

You can start the installation by turning the pump under the holding tabs. the tabs are tapered. It should stay there with no problem. Then put the installation tool on it and turn counter clock wise until it locks.

You may want to put some vasoline around the "O" ring so it stays in place. Also the Vasoline acts as a lube between the housing and "O" ring. The makes the installation a little easier

I just remembered, there is one tab that is a little different. This is an index tab. Rotate the pump until that matches up.

Hope this helps

Okay, I got it. You have to watch where the little tab goes as it seems it's specific to a certain area. Now, here's the kicker, it's still leaking. I didn't replace the housing gasket so I don't know if that's the problem. Maybe that should be my next step or maybe that should have been my first step.

Normally, what is it that goes to cause the leaking?

'sigh'

If it is the pump that leaks, it is usually the shaft seal on the back side. The cover gaskets are known to leak and were redesigned. If that is where your leak is, I'd replace the cover seal. It is only about $10 from the dealer.

Okay, thanks Larry. I've taken it for a longer drive to get my glasses fixed which were on the ground and then I stepped on them picking up a socket. DUH!

Anyways I put in 3 sealant tabs and when I last checked there was just a little drip spot, so I guess it's so far so good. I'll take the car to work tomorrow and keep an eye on it.
