Fuel Filler

Hi Again,

I am back again... always seem to have a repair to do.... I have a 94 Deville 4.9.. it is in really good shape and I like the car so have decided to do a few things to it that need to be done ( in addition to things I've already done) and keep it. I actually went to look at a Fleetwood over the weekend that the man swore was MINT and only had 77K orig miles... after a 4 hour drive there with a check in hand found a real piece of junk!!If that car had 77K miles on it it must have been ditch miles with a family of 5 living in it.... oh well it convinced me to keep my Deville..... well on to my problem/question....

I noticed the line that connects the gas tank to where you fill it up looks like it has some rust, I was even able to flake some off.. although it is not all the way through it is just a matter of time I am sure. Has anyone replace one of these.. I called the local dealership to check on the part and was told.. " I am not sure you may have to repace the whole tank" That didn't sound right to me so of course I knew I could turn to ya'll for advise. I have a few more issues I will be using this site to solve... none of them causing me down time... just things that need to be done. This site and ya'll are so helpful....it is enabling me to learn and do repairs without the high cost. There is also a great satisfaction in doing it yourself. I thank you all for the time and effort you put in this site!!!!!

Looking forward again to your advise! Thanks!!!

I seriously doubt that you have to replce the tank. Just the filler pipe. I think I have heard others say it was a bit of a PITA, but certainly doable.

Its a coincidence that this post appeared today. I have the same problem

I noticed that the pipe from my gas fill to my tank is rusted badly the other day when I was checking my rear knuckles for play.

What I am afraid of is 1) it eventually leaking and 2) rust getting into the tank. I may need to do this also. It looks fragile. Seems that when the car is running in rain, water probably washes up there..

Actually the part through the dealer is called a fuel tank filler pipe ( per the parts guy) who also told me at first Imight have to replace the tank??? which I thought sounded nuts. He called me back with a price of 265.00... asked me if I was sitting down first..... nice of him.also said will not need to replace tank ( which I preety much knew was not going to be needed but he was very insistant about it on the first call)..he told me to get a rust paint product from a auto store and use it ( I hardly think that will solve the problem) I know I will not have to replace the tank but was not sure how to get the pipe in there it looks clear where it hooks into the tank but very tight to get it up to ( not sure of the correct words) filler area towards where you gas cap is. I did find one old post on here that was for a 97 STS but it wasn't very helpful and I was not sure the set up was exactly the same on my 94 Deville. I know this car was up North for a while before I got it and that may be the culprit of the rust... I am also afraid of pieces of rust getting intot he tank... have a brand new fuel pump and def do not want to do anything to effect that. It is not rusted through as of now looking at it but I bet one good hit with a screw driver and it would have a hole.. so figured better do it now before it is a real problem. I think I will check around for the part for a better price maybe off a savalged car ??? If ya'll have any tips ( tricks of the trade) let me know. Thanks so much! Cassie

Cassie, I have the same issue. I live in Canada and this is common for us. I haven't had an issue with any flaking. I've got a 94 and it's seen 12 cold winters now with salt and sand and slush and warm and cold then snow, then rain, then the salt and sand come out. Unless this filler pipe is falling off the car, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Hi... Just an update.. It is the pipe that goes from the gas tank to where you fill up your gas... actually while under the car you can see where it connects to the tank with like a ruber boot then actually has 2 pipes ( one a vent I assume) heading up to where you put your gas in when filling up.. I can't see the conection there as the area is crowded.. but will have to deal with it as soon as I get the part. My caddy spent the first part of its life up north and so I figure that is what has caused the problem. There is not a hole in it yet but I am sure with its condition if I poked a screw driver at it it would go right through.. my concern is it would worsen and two trash from the rusting going into the tank if I let it go all the way through.. I have a new fuel pump and don't want to cause any problems inside the tank. I finally got a price from the dealer for the part 261.00... so decided since I live in the south where rust is not as bad of a problem I would check out some salvage yards. Found one they will have pulled for me this afternoon.. said it is in good condition for 35.00 sounds good to me... So this weekend I am tackling several things in order of priority...

Not long ago I changed my ISC motor due to idle problems and was having a problem getting it adjusted while doing this noticed a small leak of antifreeze from water pump so put it in the shop to have that changed and went ahead and asked them to adjust Isc while it was in there.. no luck it is still doing the same thing and at this rate will really wear on my breaks. It is almost as if the cruise is on you either stay at the same speed or increase slowly... never a decrease when you let off the gas pedal....

So I will tackle that first..... then have a pinging problem even though always using prem gas so have decided to change out EGR valve and solenoid and clean all lines.... and do a tune up...if all goes well then I will move onto the fuel filler line... then my next tackle is to figure out why air ride sagging and what I want to do about it.

Compressor works can hear it anyway when I start car but the level never changes.. I do not hear any air leaks so just need to check it all out.

I have my hands full.....I know my caddy sounds a mess but it is really a nice car in very good conditon other than the problems I currently have I am trying not to gret frustrated with them and just work through them one at a time ... but at least at the moment my 48 Dodge PU is running great!! I need to go knock on wood as it always seems to be something with one of these vehicles. A continual project. Wish I had ya'lls knowledge when it comes to vehicles... I am trying to learn but it seems like I am getting my diploma by way of the school of hard knocks...LOL...

If anybody has any helpful pointers for my above stated projects I would be greatful!

In adjusting the ISC I have read some posts that said they have put washers under the mounts to give a further distance and others say they have had to cut the screw.... do you find this to be normal??? The problem I was having before I put it in the shop was getting that .030 gap....

Thanks to you all!! I hope all your weekends are great!! I just hope mine is not spend cussing and throwing tools... haha ...
