aftermarket water pump

Recommended Posts

Waterpump went on the caddy last week, so I've been looking at getting it done. I've done some searching and I can get the GM kit for around $110US off of ebay. Rock auto has the AC Delco for 47.99 but then their shipping is outrageous at $29.99??

I can get aftermarket here in the city for $102 Cdn. with a lifetime warranty, but it's not GM or AC.

Will I need a new O-ring and gasket with the aftermarket or do they usually come with one?

Just found a Venco (new, not rebuilt) for $84.00 cdn

I don't know what to do and need your advice.

I bought one from NAPA and it was made by the same company, Airtex, that makes OEM. I remember BBob saying that the OEM was made by Airtex.

I recall that as well.

Ken D,

I installed a rebuild waterpump from Napa 2 years ago. I have not had any problems with it yet.

I am not recommending anything. This is just my experience.

I believe that an "O" ring comes with any waterpump you buy.

Remember you need a special tool, to remove and install it. The pump comes out counterclock wise.

DO NOT use any kind of sealer.

Ditto on the NAPA pump. Installed it in my '97 Deville. No problems so far (12K miles).

Make sure you use the special wrench to take it out. You'll break the locking tabs on the pump if you try any other method.

NO!!!! The pump unclocks by turning it CLOCKWISE and installs by turning it counterclockwise.

Thanks all. Yes, I did know that the pump comes out opposite from normal, but thanks for the heads up KHE. Napa has them here for $124. I asked her what the make was and she just said NAPA, well, whatever.

Now I can't find the socket tool for rent ANYWHERE in this city. You'd figure with 800,000 people there would be SOMEONE who would rent it out. Nothing buy dumbfounded looks except for one place where the guy knew what I was talking about. Stupid thing is that I need it only ONE time. Oh well.

Once, again, I appreciate all the help.

Against my express wishes, my mechanic installed an aftermarket pump. It's been 2 years and about 25K miles, but I still worry about it. I'd go the few extra bucks for OEM. And peace of mind.

Warren

She is right it does say NAPA all over the box, but on one side in fine print it will say "Airtex". I looked at my old box to confirm it.

I had the same problem finding a tool you had. Everyone thought I was trying to pull one on them because they had never heard of it. I bought mine on Ebay for about $25.00 made by Lisle. It is not very heavy duty but it has taken off and put on 2 pumps so far(not on the same car). I used a 2' breaker bar to loosen mine, with steady pressure.

Ask NAPA if you can get a discount price. I ask on a set of shocks and got $10.00 off per shock. They have discount prices for different companies.

Thanks Paul. Maybe I'll look on ebay and see what's there. I guess the hour and a half that the dealership wants for labour at $110 per hour is more than worth picking one up. I just called a friend who's the GM at one of the GMC/Chevy dealerships here and see what he can get me for parts.

I see that my rear proportion valve is leaking also.........I guess I'll add that one to the list too. :(

Just sent a PM off to Bruce to see if I can get that socket. I'll await his reply.
