Bruce Nunnally
The speed limiter is set at the factory based on the type of tires that were original equipment on that car. Dealer will most likely not reset for you even with diff tires, or won't know how to, or both. When shopping for a new Cadillac, look for sport models that came with VR/ZR or better speed rated tires; they tend to get the 150 mph speed limiter. JasonA
As stated, you cannot make your Cadillac go any faster. I disagree that "most people go faster than 112 mph". Depending on where you live, it's not practical, not safe, and not legal, and usually all three of the above. If you really want to go faster than 112 mph, sell your DeVille and go looking for a DeVille Concours. They came with H-rated tires from the factory (and an accompanying 130 mph limiter). The Sevilles from the mid-'90s had 112 mph limiters (for SLSes), 130 mph limiters (for H-rated STSes), and no limiters (for Z-rated STSes). Same for El Dorados. There should be a good selection of 1990s Cadillacs out there that have the ability to exceed 112 mph. Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?" stefank
My SLS came from the factory with V-rated tires (Euro-spec) and is speed limited to 130 mph / 210 kph. The tires would be okay to go 150 mph / 240 kph, so this can't be the only reason for the limitation. I feel my SLS could go much faster without the limiter. My guess is that it has to do with marketing tricks also. An SLS has to be slower that the STS, thus the limitation. Stefan
jackc
Our tires and cars may be ok to go 112, 130, 150, etc., but that family that turns in front of us thinking we're going 40 or 60 certainly won't be. My brother was telling me this weekend about the story of one of our old friends who was going 100 down a street in Dallas when he hit and killed the guy who turned left in front of him. Horrible tragedy. Let's be safe out there.
Hud
When I had my TransAm, I asked the dealer to raise the limiter. They would not do it because of the liability issue. I purchased a Hypertech and did it myself. I also put Z tires on the car. I took it over 150 several times (in the desert). I did it to out do my friends, we all have fast cars. I would not do it again because of safety and cost.
tjtjwdad
I purchased a Hypertech and did it myself. To all I've heard other quotes over the years implying that this specific code (speed limit) has been cracked, but not so on a Cadillac. I thought GM used the same OBII system on all of their cars since the late 90's. Hmmmm Jim
JasonA
Stefan, the Euro spec cars are probably different from the US models...I don't know the speed limiter details on those. Good point. Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?"
