94 Deville Concours Fire

Just before the hack I reported a fire and many questions were asked. Due to the damage (if picture comes up) I didn't think it would ever be determined. A small hole rusted near the HVAC/Computer area allowed snow/moisture to accumulate and appears to be the point of origin. Not sure if it was a plugged drain or rusted from the outside in (Michigan car for four years). I did notice a musty smell driving with the windows down and AC on once or twice this summer. I only did this a couple of times when taking pictures this summer. So owners beware as if this car had been parked in the garage or closer to the house the results would have distastious. Bad enough to loose my baby. Hope I did the picture correctly.

Larry,

The car had been sitting for 16 hours. State Farm routinly seens an investigator in fire cases and this kid was sharp. Saying that with 35 years of mechanical experience. In addition (my therory) as blaze progressed the rear fuel rail or regulator ruptured fueling the fire. The rear cylinder head melted (cams, pistons visible). This gentleman took the time to explain the various burn patterns (learned a bunch today) and seams reasonable fire started just under glove box. Definatly burned from the inside out.

The PCM is located near the glovebox on the 4.9

How much gasoline did you have in the tank? Looks like it did not explode.

The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Adallak, just to let you know....that only happens in the movies now a days.

Gas tanks are vented.

They will only burn.

 The size of an explosion depends on how much dynamite and fertilizer you carry in the trunk. :P:D:lol:

I can finally see some humor in this (STS in the AM) but picture this. 5:45AM. Wake up, look at the blinds and note, boy the sun is bright this morning. Glance at the clock and think, hum? Look out the window and this baby is burnin. 30’ from the front door, parked near a 60’ pine tree, I figure time to get dressed (Michigan) leash the dogs and perhaps step outside. Once outside, 2 air bags, and 3 tires going off, did bring to mind the gas tank. Mind you, no caffeine, 20 degrees, snowing, wind blowing like heck……..and really wondering how fast the pine tree would burn as my Daughters new find (79’ Z-28) is parked about the same distance from the pine tree. Also thinking about the garage and the house as things picked up during the 35 minutes it took for the FD to arrive. Yes, TV scenes came to mind and the gas tank the Grand Finally. All is well but coffee first would have helped-------

Having problems with file size but any 94 or close (year) owners should be concerned about a potential rust through problem that can cause a (big) fire. I think an HVAC, cowl drain issue, rather than a rust through issue (from the outside). No case of the butt issues with anyone but this can't be the only time this has or will happen. PM/mail for a pic to check your car.

I am curious as to how a rust issue from a clogged HVAC evaporator drain could cause a fire???

I don't understand this either nor do I think its an issue. Please be more clear in your thoughts here, I am not sure what you mean by "No case of the butt issues with anyone but this can't be the only time this has or will happen". I thought this was a electrical fire?
