Password Safety

Is it safe to let your computer remember passwords for websites? Given the recent hack, I was questioning what is safe and what is not. If a hacker got into my PC, bypassing my Windows & Router Firewalls, would those passwords be safe if they were saved? I use the Mozilla Firefox browser now and upon going to a secure site, a pop up always ask if I would like Firefox to remember that password. I've always replied no.

I do not let the computer store passwords for websites requiring credit card info. I use Opera.

I don't let my browser (any browser) store passwords for anything. I can usually remember all my passwords, but I do store them in a freeware program called PINS:

Nothing stored on a computer with internet access is ever completely safe. You could use password storing programs for convenience but keep in mind that you probably don't know the creator of the program. I have a buddy that builds a backdoor on every program or website he creates. Sometimes low tech is the best method for password storage. Memorize it and keep a paper copy in a lock box or a safe.
