Check engine light

PAG

Recommended Posts

Good to see everything back and running......Thanks to all that make this place happen!

My Engine service light comes on after the car warms up. It seems to run fine...no sputter, or accerating problems, but it did stall at a stop light, funny thing the engine light wasn't on when that happened, once i get it going, then it came on.

Can someone walk me through how to find the code, or do i need to purchase expensive equipment? I think i read something before we got hacked about a loop, with the O2 sensor and coolant sensor?

Thanks!

Paul

PAG,

to get your car's codes do the following:

HOW TO "ENTER" DIAGNOSTIC MODE

To enter diagnostic mode, proceed as follows:

Turn ignition "ON." Engine can be either OFF or RUNNING.

Depress the "OFF" and "WARMER" buttons on the Climate Control Center (CCC) simultaneously and hold until the segment check appears on the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

After entering On-Board Diagnostics, a segment check is automatically performed and then any trouble code stored in computer memory will be displayed. Codes may be stored for the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC), Air Conditioning Programer (ACP), Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) Traction Control System (TCS) or Road Sensing Suspension (RSS) systems.

have a pen and paper handy, and write down the codes as they come up. Post your codes here and we will tell you what they mean.

you can also use the following link to get the code information:

Just out of curiosity, when you pulled the codes, did it say "current" or "history" after the E041 code. Also did you clear the code after you read it, and if so did the code come back after being cleared??

Sorry for not responding sooner....crazy this time of year!

I wasn't able to clear the codes....i followed the instructions from the web addy, but i was never asked to "clear" codes. It does need a tune up, that i knew when i purchased it. I have everything, just need a window of time to work on it. It hasn't stalled in while but just now it hesitated on stop light acceleration, the light came on and it said E41 and also F48. What is F48?

It sits in the garage, we are leaving shortly to visit family in Mass. So i will have at it when we return on Sunday, i'll have all day Monday to work on it.

Thanks you for your help!

I have never seen an F, code, try E048, that would be:

P048 (E048) ......................... Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system Problem

I changed the cap and rotor, amazing it was running as well as it was! changed the wires as well, signs of arcing everywhere. Went for the plugs and could not get them to break free. :( So far everthing was going fine and didn't want to get into that big of a job, and decided to leave them in and get a local buddy with a shop better prepared for what looks like hell getting them out.

I did find a leaking rubber oil line, the top one going into the radiator, that don't look like fun replacing either..lol.

Caddy runs awsome....idles quiet and smooth, very responsive, hardly using the gas to keep speed.

After i took it for run around the block, everything was great except light came on again with the same code. Is that because i haven't cleared old ones out yet? Still working on getting it cleared.

Are you getting an E048? If so, open the throttle body and look inside. In there you will see two tubes looking back at you. THey may have some gunky deposits on them narrowing their aperature. Clean them with a long coat hanger, ramming it in an out of both ports as deep as you can go. Those ports connect to your EGR valve and they must be clean. I have used round wire brushes that are used to clean rifles (Hoppe) along with GM upper engine cleaner (O2 safe solution), to clean the hell out of them. It might help for you to remove the EGR valve and clean the pindle, don't get any cleaning solution on the diaphram it will damage it, but clean the EGR pindle the best you can.. Before you pull the EGR valve be sure you have a replacement gasket on hand. Mike

Also check all EGR related vacuum hoses, here is a photo of the EGR system

Keep in mind guys this is a 92 Fleetwood, the codes he quoted are correct for the ECM.

F48 - Refrigerant System Problem - Probably low freon in the air conditioning system.

E41 - Cam Sensor Signal Problem - I would move the wiring around that goes to the Cam Sensor, it could be shorted or open. It could also be a faulty sensor, but I would check for a short first. A plug wire too close to the wiring harness will cause all kinds of problems also.

Interesting Paul, I have never seen an F code for a 4.9 and assumed that it was an E48 or E048... Looking at the history, http://www.100megsfree4.com/cadillac/cad1990/cad92f.htm this car has a 4.9 searching OBDI, I don't see the F code, odd. Thanks

The "F" codes are BCM codes according to my 92/93 manual. Most pertain to the outside/inside air sensors and AC. They are F10 thru F51. I got familiar with "F" codes when my 92 Deville started having AC problems.

That's good to know thanks. The learning never stops. I wonder why I have been unable to find them on the code lists.

I really have never found a good complete OBD code list. I rely more on my manuals than anything else.

Thanks for all your help Gents!

A new code surfaced today when it stalled 3 times, and a E12 came up along with E41 and the F26 I do know it needs freon so that prolly why the F code is up. I did look at the wires and i'm about to go out and move some spark plug wires around and hope that fixes the problem. I hate electrical gremlins!

Move some wires away, and also found the cam sensor wires touching the block which lead to the insulation on it to dry out, so i sleeved the wires in an old piece of vacuum hose, took it for a little ride, and no light came on. :D

Thanks again for the help, and thanks for this forum!

Update:

The light came on a fews days later, and the Caddy was stalling hard after the car warmed up.....only the code E41. I looked into the price of the sensor, it was $170.Then one day while looking under the hood i notice the distributor whobble a bit........when the rpms increased it wasn't as bad, at low rpms is when the light would come on and stall.

I called the local boneyard and found distributor out of low mileage 92 Deville, running motor for $65.....i changed them out last night fairly easily and it fired up on first engine revolution.......awsome stuff! Car runs better then i thought it would. This distributor has no whobble and idle is very smooth. The old one must of had bad shaft or something.

Now onto the next repair, oil cooler lines...althought with the dist. out the lines are easy to get to. Even though this Caddy has given me some troubles, i am hooked. I will probably trade it in for a newer model, something sporty though....lol.

Thanks to all!

Paul
