joeb
My 96 STS temp gauge pointer is always at 12:00 when warm. In 5yrs it has never gone over to my knowledge but the wife usually drives the car. I have had several incidents lately that have me concerned. the upper rad hose blew off the radiator. tightened it up and all seems well. a week later the WP started leaking. fixed that. for the last several yrs I have had small drips under the overflow hose. I usually have to add 1 gal/yr of coolant. its going somewhere. this week I went on a 200mi round trip in 30 deg weather. I came upon an accident so the traffic was stopped. I had to creep along for about 15min and i looked down and the temp gauge went up 1-1/2 notches higher than usual. I had never seen this before. as soon as i got up to normal speed the temp went down to normal. I checked the coolant at home and i was down about 1 quart. there was some black scuz in the rad cap area. maybe from the bars leak seeping out? maybe I need a new GM thermostat and new rad cap? any thoughts? Webmast84
I think I read somewhere you have to force the Bars Leak down the hose because they'll either clog up or never make it out of the radiator water hold. I dunno if that's nonsense or not lol. I've not done anything to mine yet. I know that I want to get a Trans fluid temp guage (New item talked about in an engine magazine I read) and a new temp guage for the engine too. I'm waiting for a Jegs magazine so hopefully it will have some.
joeb
I put the barsleak in the upper rad hose when i did the WP. what do you mean by new temp gauge? in addition to the stock gauge? my son has a gauge pod on his grand prix with boost/trans temp. the trans temp gauge never seems to move. Ranger
Joeb, Start with the usual basics. Have the surge tank cap pressure tested. Check the tensioner and purge line.
thexboxpiii
Your overflow tank is probably broken. Disconnect the lower hose and inspect the fitting to check if theres any cracks in it. I had the same problem with leaking coolant.
