Low oil pressure/ stop engine warning

While driving my 1995 deville a message came up. Warning low oil pressure/ stop engine. I stopped the car added oil, I had had the oil changed two weeks ago and had 82% life. I continued to get the same message. The car is setting at the garage awaiting the mechanic to get back from deer hunting. Is my oil pump going out?

It is probably an oil pressure sensor that has gone bad. Tee in a mechanical gage and view the actual oil pressure at idle to be sure the pump is OK. The 4.9 has low oil pressure at isle by design - I think around 4 psi. If you have pressure, then that would indicate a defective sensor. If sensor replacement is required, use the sensor from GM.

Kyle01 is my father. I wasn't in the car when the problem first happened, but he also said something about going down hill when it first happened. Could the pick up in the oil pump be bad? My guess is the sensor also, but need to make a 100% sure. Anyone with any pics of the sensor? How hard is it to replace?

I panicked BIGTIME when that warning first came up on my dash.

Of course, as KHE suggested, it was simply a defective oil pressure sending unit. wink.gif

EDIT: It's on the adaptor housing, right next to the oil filter. You might want to check the integrity of the electrical connection.

There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises
