ted tcb
On these recent cold mornings, it sounds like my STS has a rattling hair dryer coming from my top left side of the dash. Its unrelated to my blower speed. If I turn off my climate control, the loud, blowing rattle persists. If I change vent or defrost positions, the rattle persists. It never changes volume or pitch. I drive for perhaps 5 minutes, and the sound dissappears every single time. It doesn't slow down, it just stops instantly. It looks like its coming from the top left dash speaker, but its not coming through the radio ... definitely not a spark plug interference sound. Almost sounds like a separate blower with some leafs caught up ... thank God it goes away within a few minutes. Any clues. Thanks in advance. 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
bc6t
I have a similar sound that is related to a noisy bearing from the in-car temp sensor fan. It is located to the right of your lighting controls and has a small 1 square inch grill on the front. Check to see if the noise is actually coming from there before you pull apart your dash.... Chances are it's your in car temp sensor assembly and it's echoing up through the dash - just cover or tap that part of the dash and see if there's a difference. My 2 cents.... ted tcb
Thanks, I'll try covering the grill and listening for any differences. I wonder why the sound goes away after a few minutes? 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
Ranger
Thanks, I'll try covering the grill and listening for any differences. I wonder why the sound goes away after a few minutes? My guess would be that the asperator fan bearing warms up and then quiets down.
ted tcb
Makes sense ... I'm not going to rip up my dash, knowing I still have ample, quiet heat after a few minutes ... I'll just turn up the volume on the Bose 425 1989 FWD Fleetwood, Silver 1995 STS Crimson Pearl on Black leather 1997 STS Diamond White 1999 STS Crimson Pearl 2001 STS Silver 2003 STS, Crimson Pearl
Ranger
I think you may be able to access it from under the dash rather than ripping into it.
bc6t
I once looked to replace mine - but decided to put up with the noise for a few momoemnets during the cold months. As I recall, you can access the unit from the side at the front of the door frame - might have to remove the light controls. One easy option might be to remove, drill a small hole into the house, give it a shot of lubricant, cross your fingers, and re-install. Might try it this summer - and see if it worked 5 months later....hahaha. Tom R. 1998 Cadillac STS with 102K Miles
