Regis
Welcome! The best/cheap mod(s)? Hmmmm...... most likely a performance cat back system. Other than that keep it stock and oem. If you search through the archives you'll notice plenty and i mean plenty of attempts to get more power out of an already squeezed Northstar. If you're ready to drop some serious dough for a little more umph then I suggest you talk to Mark (Mark 99STS). He can tell you what'll be involved. How long have you owned your 96STS? It's a fast car to begin with. Have you tried pulling off the line in 2nd gear? If you just got it then I would suggest getting to know the car better and understanding what makes it unique. Remember that it's a luxury sports sedan first and a racer second. Otherwise a camaro, gto, corvette, etc may be more to your taste. I believe the 96 gets mineral oil. I use Pennzoil (regular) and there are plenty of other brands that are popular on here. Regis
u sayed somthing about starting in second gear??? Put the gear shifter into 2nd and put the peddle to the metal. You'll get up 50-60mph in a hurry. You'll notice that the shift from 1st to 2nd is rather firm so hang onto the steering wheel. It's great for racing light to light...... not that I approve of such behavior. What STSJohn is referring to is the decarbonizing technique suggested for Northstar engines. It goes something like this: Get on a nice empty stretch of highway, pull over or slow down enough and put the gear selector in 2nd, then put the gas peddle to the floor and get the speed up to 60-70mph, then let off the gas and let engine brake the car down to about 40mph, then once again put the peddle to the floor. Repeat this process about 8 times in a row and most or all carbon should blow out the tail pipes. Perform this periodically (I do it at least once every 2 weeks....depends on your driving style) By allowing the engine to brake (slow) the car down it exercises the rings. Someone else may chime in with more info on the benefits of this procedure. STSJohn
Your STS was Built to be driving hard, And with the milage on that year that northstar isnt even broken in yet, I personally have 65,000 on my 98STS and gotta tell you the harder I drive her the more she wants. As for your other question I cant answer that but Im sure someone else on this board can 2004 Cadillac CTS 3.6L VVT Light platinum 39K miles ~Vogue VTXi Package - Corsa Exhaust - K & N Cold air intake - Blacked out tints 2004 Cadillac Escalade 6.0L all-whell drive Pewter 42k miles ~22" Tis 07 Rims - E&G Chrome Vertyical billet Grill - Limo tints - Tv's in the Visor and headrests 1990 Mustang GT Painted Cadillac Diamond White - 604 Rwhp Family Cars: 2004 Cadillac XLR (Mom) 2005 Cadillac STS V8(Dad) 2000 Eldorado ETC (Brother)
