I need some help understanding the motor mounts on a 1998 Cadillac STS. I noticed there is no torque bars on this caddy so How many motor mounts are in the front. Also the mounts that you see if you remove the front wheels are those considered motor mounts or transmission mounts. I know I need those two but what are they called, Tranny or Engine Mounts. The motor mount in the front middle by the radiator looks good, are there anymore up front to help with engine torque.

Look at this link from Autozone I dont know which one I need for the ones buy the wheels.

How do you know you need all four mounts. The two side mounts rarely go bad, if ever. The rear transmission mount isn't prone to failing either. What symptoms is the car exibiting? Do you get a "clunk" sound when steeping on the gas? If you hold down the brake, and have someone watch the engine while you step on the gas, does it seem like it's moving an excessive amount? If so, than it's the front engine mount that's gone bad. Also, do the two side mounts (one side is a tranny mount, the other is an engine mount) appear to be damaged or leaking? If so, than I would look for other problems as well. Check http://www.rockauto.com for the engine and tranny mounts. They have excellent prices.

Not all of them need to be replaced. The Rubber is falling out of the two on the side by the wheels and I done the brake test and the engine has a good amount of play. Also if I hit the gas hard in first gear and dont let it shift on the deceleration you can hear and feal the motor come down. I know this would prolly point to the front one but the rubber looks good on it, just not on the two side ones.

Thanks for the quick reply and any more advice would be greatly appreciated,

Jason

Jason,

the front mount is oil filled... it will probably look okay from afar, but if you look close you will see ti is actually torn/punctured so the oil has leaked out..

the rubber may not show signs of deterioration...
