Tire Replacement Time

To all,

It has come time for me to replace the tire on my STS. Lot of input here from you folks about your experiences with the various tires that are out there.

My tire size is 235-55-17. What I've found is the selection in this size is not as good as it is in others. So I've thought about changing to a different size tire. However I'd like to keep the same over all height (a not to screw around with the speed odometer or anything else) and not to have tire rubbing with hard left & hard right travel (when parking etc ...)

Right now I've thought about Michelin Pilot Sport A/S and Pirelli PZero. Some of the others mentioned here (Goodyear Assurance, Michelin Hydro Edge etc...) are nbot available in that size (or I've over looked it). Most of the driving in this car is freeway (65-75 MPH) in the wet Northwest. Driveability in the snow would be a plus but I have a 4WD when the snow gets deep. I kinda' figure that when your on ice ... you're on your own!

Thanks for any feedback and input.

Also, one last question, I remember form times past that these cars sometimes has a vibration at certain speeds. There is a type of balancing that helpd eliminate this? Does anyone remember what it's called?

Thanks again!

Jim

Jim:

A 235/55R17 is about 27.2" in diameter. A 255/50R17 would also be in the neighborhood (27.0") or alternatively, a 225/60R17 (27.6"). Remember also that any given tire can be within 1/2" either side of that nominal diameter. For instance, while a 225/60R17 is NOMINALLY 27.6" tall, you may be able to find one on the shorter side that would closely match your current 235/55R17 tires.

You may also consider purchasing 16" wheels. A 235/60R16 tire is nominally the same diameter as your current 235/55R17.

The special balance of which you speak is a "road force balance". See this website for more information: http://www.gsp9700.com/

If most of your driving is cruising on the highway I would go for a set of michelin mxv4+ in your size I have them and they are a nice highway tire and good in the rain and snow the car rides real smooth on the freeway. Check michelins web site they show which tire rides the best & tire wear etc... the numbers they use say an 8 or 9 for the ratings easch point is 10% Say a tire rated a 6 for ride a tire rated an 8 the 8 is 20% better ride..

I just bought 4 Goodyear assurence tripple tread in a 225-60-16 for my wifes eldo and so far I am impressed with them. They are really quiet and look like they will be great in the snow. I normally dont care what consumer reports says but after I bought the tires I saw where they rated them tops. I think I agree with them this time. I also like the fact that they are made in USA.
