PAG
Well.............i was having a wonderful Sunday afternoon. Changed the oil in the caddy, and noticed a hesitation in the throttle, sticking a bit, so i gave it some gogo juice to loosing things up a bit, and WHAM.......accelerator stuck wide open, rev limiter was even kicking in. Before i shut the thing down, there was antifreeze leaking out from under ther car.....badly! What a dumb s#$t i am! looks like the waterpump seal blew out. Anyone perform this project on a 4.9?? Is it possible to pull waterpump without removing everthing else? Anyhelp on this would be awesome!! I must say, these front drive cars have loads of room for big hands and fat fingers! Scotty
I have done the water pump at least 3 times on the 4.9, its a knuckle buster but its not too bad. There is not a lot of room but if you take you time its not a bad job, I once did it in the parking lot of a Marriott Hotel with borrowed tools... I bought a dedicated gasket scraper for the task. Remove the pulley nuts before you take the belt off to help you hold the pulley. Taking the battery and coolant container out will give you some room. A new pump at NAPA was about $100 if I recall, I don't advise buying a rebuilt pump. Here is a diagram with the torque specs, Mike
PAG
I got almost all the nuts and bolts off her last night before the storms rolled in, but the pulley won't come off, not enough room. I did what ya said and removed the battery and AC line, but the 2 largest bolts close to the fire wall are gonna be painful. Thanks for the diagrams! Taking the pump out might not be too bad, but getting it in and getting all the nuts back in are going to be fun for sure! Thank You! PG
Scotty
Yes the two bolts nearest the firewall are the hardest. I think I used a 3/8" drive socket in there. What do you mean the pulley bolts won't come off? You mean the three bolts? Are they too tight? If I recall they are 10 mm? Buy a long 6 point wrench to get in there if you can.. Let us know how it comes out.. Mike You removed the AC line? Does your AC not work? Did you have to let the freon out? I never had to remove the AC line attached to the accumulator. PAG
You got it....AC didn't work, and i need to convert to R134. The line was dead before i opened it, checked it with a gauge, it was reading 0, i found out why when i went to loosen the line nut.....lol. I have the bolts removed from the pulley, but there isn't enough room between WP assembly and frame for me to get the dang thing out, so i am manuvering it around in order to get at the bolts and such. I also went to NAPA, and new WP was $71....thanks for that tip as well..................you da man!!! Going out to garage now, hope to have it off, and cure gasket for tomorrow install. Thank you! Scotty
That pulley should come out after the 3 bolts are out, you couldnt get the 3rd bolt out? Glad you are making headway, good price on the new waterpump.. Next time it will be easier!
PAG
ok................old one is off, and new one is on. Clean up was not easy, where those 2 bolts were on the back side was just as hard to clean with the scraper. I found out why there was a leak, the WP was replaced at some point, and who ever did the job broke off the stud thats just above the vibration damper. So, all i can hope for is this will hold, i put high temp RTV on both sides of gasket. I'll give it the night to cure and tomorrow throw in some coolant, then inspect more on what else might of gotten damaged from the stuck accelerator. Thanks for your help Mike! Scotty
No problem glad to help. Someone else recently had a broken stud similar to you on a 4.9. Here is the thread and how he handled it... Frank was here in early October, if you have any questions drop him an email... PAG
Back up and running...............no leaks. Seams to be running just fine, no obvious problems It actually went back together rather easy and quickly, gave it 24 hours for gasket to dry, and all worked out. Thanks again Mike! mike5514
Got here a little late. I did this job on a 4.1 a few years back and one of the torx bolts needed drilling out, quite a job. I learned the hard way to put lock tight on the pully bolts (had the pully come off on the road), also purchased from a cadillac dealer new pully bolts.
