Cooper tires

When I recently purchased my 2001 DTS, I asked the seller to put a new set of oem equivalent tires on it. When I picked it up, he had put on Cooper Lifeliner tires. The size, rating, and pressure seems to be correct, but I am constantly correcting the steering wheel to keep the car going in a straight line. The last time I had a similar experience was after getting conned into one of those "four tires for $50.00" newspaper ads when I was young and foolish too many years ago. In this current situation, I don't recall the car wandering when I took it for a test drive prior to purchase. This really seems to be due to the tire selection. May be wishful thinking on my part. Anyone else have similar experiences with Cooper tires?

I am due for my fourth tire rotatation on my Cooper Lifeliners. 5,000 mile rotates.

I have had no problems, period. I am extremely happy with this brand, and will continue to use and promote it until proven otherwise. American made.

Sounds like the old tire's were masking an alignment issue...small issue but there nun the less...have it aligned and should be O.K. Did he put the SLE,SLT on the car? If the Lifeliner Classic II was put on...It really is not the best choice for the Caddy...I can see the dealer using those for cost savings... I spent several years as a Cooper dealer...Great tire and the Co. stands behind the product. Not once did we ever get a return over a defective tire...The SLE or SLT would be the best choice...The SLT will run just a hair wider and look the best. Ran them on my 1994 Deville...

I had a set of coopers touring sle lifeliners on my 01 dts I actually liked them better than the michelins I have on it now. The michelins ride a little better on the highway a little softer ride but the coopers handled much better under hard cornering..And the michelins are not that much better riding Just a little. The coopers perform like the the michelin pilot series if not better.Cooper makes a nice tire. I have the michelin

Energy™ MXV4® Plus on the car now .. Sound like you have an alignment issue It doe not take much to put these cars out of alignment just rubbing a curb or hitting a nice pot hole can do the trick Get your car checked out it probably needs a 4 wheel align.. I had to do it on mine and it was out a little..Also tire pressure can make your car pull check them mine rides best at 30psi cold.so when you drive it some the tire pressure will go up a couple psi.

I put the Lifeliner Touring SLE on about 10 months ago.

I cant find any fault with them after they were road force balanced. They have held the balance through a couple of rotations & seem to be wearing OK.

I'd buy them again & will probably get some for the Mountaineer.

Thanks for the input, guys. At least now I won't be chasing the wrong problem. To answer DADCAD, the Coopers that are on the car are Touring SLE, so it looks like they are not the cheapies. The local Caddy dealership sent me a coupon this week for a 4 wheel alignment for $129.95. What a coincidence! Will run it in there on Monday and add the alignment to my list of things they need to do.

My Dad has them on his Fleetwood - no problems and a great wearing tire. I will buy a set for my Fleetwood when it needs tires as Cooper is the only tire manufacturer that makes 235-70R15 in a whitewall. The Fleetwoods look terrible with blackwalls...

I have Cooper winter tires... does that count? lol The Cooper Weather Master's are a lot like the Michelin snows I had a few years back. No complaints after two winters. And yes I will agree that it sounds more like an alignment issue than a tire issue.

Cooper also makes Hurcules.

I just removed them, and replaced them with Goodyear.

I find the Coopers a pretty good tire for dry summer days, and thats about all.

Terrible traction in the rain.

IMHO, I will never use them again.

I also found the balancing was a nightmare every 3 months.

Hay DADCAD. What is the difference between the tires that Cooper makes? Are the "Cooper" tires better than the "Hurcules" or other off names?

I ask because I had just the opposite experiance of Bigjay. In my case it was probably cause the Goodyears were worn.

Just wondering....

Big Jay

Jay,

Did you have Coopers or Hercules and which model? If you read through your post it's vague and implies that All Coopers are only good on dry roads in the summer. If you tell us which model then it might help qualify that statement. I have Cooper Winter Master snow tires and Dunlop SP Sport 5000 for the 3 other seasons. If I ran the Coopers all year long then I could certainly post a negative experience in regards to Cooper tires. However, that would be inappropriate and unfair to Cooper as a brand since I would have used the wrong tire for the wrong application.

There are many tire brands that I simply either have not tried or stay away from for reasons ranging from hearsay to hard facts. Does that mean that all the tire models under a brand are inferior? I hardly doubt that. I do believe that few people are qualified to assess tire brand quality unless they have a mechanically sound vehicle, time and resources, have tried all the applicable brand models, and have experience and knowledge on which to base opinions on or against. And I value your opinion Jay. So tell us which model(s) of Cooper or Hercules caused you to have a bad taste towards the brand in general. I'm curious if the others aren't.

One of the best tires I ever had on my 91 Seville was a Cooper tire it was a wet weather tire with an advanced tread design. Unfortunately they stopped making it and I went to Michelin.

I actually had the Hurcules Ultra Plus I think? I found them really bad in the rain.

I am not a huge fan of the Goodyear either, but they aren't too bad.

I did have Cooper on my Cutlass, and they were a little slick, but the wear was great.

I have never tried the winter kind, but I have heard a lot of good things about them.

I did however take the advice from this forum, and put on a set of the Mich. on the Deville. Boy they are a nice tire.

I guess the ones that were on my STS when I got them were just too far gone.

I still have to admit I really like the Firestones the most, but too pricey right now.

The Futuras I had on the Deville were cheap, but just that.....They sucked in the rain too.

I guess you can argue all the brands to a point. It all boils down to driver style.

Dadcad,

When I read your " Naoy " I was thinking, "Hmmm what's this? Haven't seen this one before. Must be one of those new fancy abbreviations that slipped by my radar." Inquiring minds want to know....what word was it supposed to be? laugh.gif

I'd say one of the biggest difference (besides mechanical construction) is rubber compound. For example, Uniroyal, BFGoodrich, and Michelin are all under the Michelin umbrella, but there are vast differences between those three brands. One of the big reasons I like the more expensive Michelin tires is the tire compound. It always looks nice new, no matter how old the tire is. I've had a few different BFGoodrich tires before, and after so many miles, the rubber starts looking "pitted" and eroded. There's probably a tire engineer term for that, but I don't know what it is.

A cheaper tire will probably perform just "as well" as a more expensive one, in many areas, but there will always be a compromise. I've never really cared for any of the cheaper brands I've purchased before (like Kelly, BFGoodrich, or Firestone), but it's usually for different reasons. I didn't like the Kelly Chargers because they rode like rocks. I didn't like the BFGoodrich Radial T/As because they had zero wet traction. The Firestone (SS10s) were okay, but they wore out quick.
