NorthWest Star
Could someone provide some help on translating the codes that I downloaded from my '97 STS? It reads the following codes: P0603-Control Module Long term memory reset --- probably not a problem P0404 - Exhaust Gas recriculation open Position Performance --- don't know what this means C1761 - Rt front Position Sensor input fault --- probably why I get the "suspension" alarm B2120 -- Lumbar up/down sensor failed --- no big deal The P0404 is probably the only one I neet to address right now, I am getting the "Service engine soon" light on the dash, it is at about 98K miles, manual says that I need to change spark plugs. Done that, but how do I reset the alarm? Any help is greatly appreciated. I am amazed at the amount of information this vehicle monitors. Will it tell me when I need to change my shorts? adallak
Looks like it is time to replace the EGR valve and gasket and clean up EGR tubes inside the throttle body, throttle body itself, check vacuum lines etc. Bad EGR valve or passages/tubes can set SES light. KHE
Remove the EGR valve and clean it so that the plunger does not stick when depressed. There are no EGR tubes in the throttle body - that is for the 4.9 engine. Ranger
A word of caution. When you remove and clean the EGR valve, do not hold it upside down so as to allow the carb cleaner to run down into the "can" as it will destroy the insulation on the windings. If you have had the fuel rail recall done, you'll have to remove the satinless steel fuel rail. If not, then there is enough flex in the nylon rail to remove the EGR valve. The car will not tell you when to change your shorts. It will however, on occassion, induce the need to.
adallak
Cleaning the EGR valve may be just a waste of time (mine was). I do not know whether it is easy to remove the EGR valve on a Northstar, but it is time consuming on 4.9. You do all the job, put things back just to figure out nothing changed. The valve is not that expensive BTW. My car does not have diagnoctics code for shorts, but I heard the newst DTS was equiped with Shorts Life Monitor with "Change Shorts Soon" message.
