AaronM
I was driving home from a friend's house a couple of days ago and I was going about 20 mph down his street and then stopped for the turn. The power steering and brakes both stopped working and the engine shut off. I though it was just a hiccup. The car started up with a little more effort than usual. There were no more problems until yesterday. On the way to school, the car drove perfectly. On the way home was another story. I started up my car and pulled out of my parking spot, the car began stubbling and the SES light flashed on and off. I was limping out of the parking lot. I had to stop and restart it about 15 times on teh 5 mile drive home. Every time I would slow down or put it into drive, it would stumble and shut off. I wasn't sure if I was going to make it home. I had to roll through 4-way stop intersections so my car would not shut off. I made sure no one was coming before rolling . I was about 1/2 mile away from school and I was going 45 and my car started sputtering and going crazy. I floored it to see if it was something that just needed cleaned out, well that did nothing. The car didn't respond. It was shaking and chugging along with the SES light practically strobing, lol. The power steering and brakes went again. I was coasting from 45 and had the E-brake on. I pulled off the road and put the hazard lights on. I tried for about 5 minutes to get her to start. The spedo was going crazy going up to 80 mph, lol. A bunch of error messages came up on the screen. I finally got it started and stumbled home. I checked for codes. I think they were E052 and then some other ones. I looked them up in my big service book and I found a page describing the problems I was having exactly and listed the codes I got too. It looks like one of my battery cables or PCM cables is coming loose. I will have to follow the steps in the service manual to see if that is the problem. I sure hope it is! I don't want to be throwing a bunch of money into repairs. My Caddy has treated me very well. This is the first time it has ever broken down on me. The car still runs pretty rich and gets 13 mpg, lol. I still love her! 18 Year Old Male Black 1992 STS 4.9L 90,XXX Miles Flowmaster 80 series muffler
Scotty
Check for a bad battery (dead cell) and bad connections at the battery first.

If the battery/cables don't fix the problem, have a look at your catalytic converter. Running rich can kill a converter in no time. Perhaps yours has plugged up? Ranger
A flashing SES light means a severe misfire. I'd look at the ignition system, plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc.
adallak
Aaron, Hopefully you'll find the problem. I would hate to be towed too, but this is a case when you must have been towed. Loosing brakes and power steering is not safe at all no matter how close is your home. Not to mention the possible damage made to the car. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
KevinW
A flashing SES light means a severe misfire. I'd look at the ignition system, plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc. There's no ability to detect misfires prior to OBDII. In addition, I would ensure there's fuel in the tank (add a gallon if necessary), and the fuel pressure is in the acceptable range (use a gauge). ___________________________________________________
AaronM
Hi, I checked the battery connections and they were all okay. I started up the car again and it didn't stubble. But, it is running a little rough. I let my dad take it around the block a couple of times to see if he could get it to die. It didn't stumble. My dad revved the engine a few times and it gets pretty shaky around 3000rpm. The car vibrates. When he let off, the engine misfired. The codes are E052 I034 A050 The first two seem to be related to the loss of power and the last one I could not find. If I can't figure this out, I will have to take it to the car shop. My dad said he thinks it could be a sensor or the EGR valve. Hopefully this will not be too expensive! 18 Year Old Male Black 1992 STS 4.9L 90,XXX Miles Flowmaster 80 series muffler
Scotty
The codes are P052 (E052) ....................................................... PCM Memory Reset I034 ........................................ Loss of Powertrain Control Module Data A050 ........................................... HVAC - Coolant Temperature Too High If you have an ohm meter check each ignition wire for continuity and record the resistence. Post it here, easy job E052 is NOT a problem it indicates that the battery was disconnected. IF it has NOT been disconnected immediately clean the battery connections. Check the GROUND (CKT 450 BLACK/WHITE WIRE) or loss of power to (CKT 339 PNK/BLK WIRE). Remove and install the PCM A/B, C/D and E/F connectors and ensure they are latched. See attached for ground locations. The GROUND (CKT 450) controls the transaxle position switch, cruise control servo, ISC motor and Powertrain control module. CHK 450 attaches to S108 and runs to the ISO Ground Junction Block 14-5. The ISO Ground Junction Block is located RH side of engine compartment, forward of ISO Power Junction Block. S108 is located -- Engine harness, RH rear corner of engine, eleven inches from grommet (P103). P103 is located RH front of dash. Circuit (CHK 339) runs from the UNDERHOOD RELAY CENTER (PCM FUSE 7) to the IGN connection of the PCM.
Scotty
I was timed out of the above post, here was my final edit for E052: Check the GROUND (CKT 450 BLACK/WHITE WIRE) or loss of power to (CKT 339 PNK/BLK WIRE). The manual states that if E052 is present with a complaint of engine quit, stall, stumble, messages flashing, or other stored codes, check for intermittant loss of power to (CKT 339) or Ground (CKT 450) to the PCM. Manipulate wiring and connections with engine running. Remove and install the PCM A/B, C/D and E/F connectors and ensure they are latched. See attached for ground locations.
