area under intake?

I was changing my WP on my 96 seville and was loosening the WP belt so I attempted to take off the belt cover/guard and the top 10mm bolt dropped down into the area under the intake manifold. i cannot see the bolt and i am wondering if this area is sealed to the engine? if you take off the intake, i know the starter is in this area but is there a sheetmetal or plastic pan that seals this area? I guess you could call it the lifter valley but the northstar does not have pushrods or block mounted cam like a chevy smallblock. DOHC chain drive and all that stuff. can i leave the bolt in there and not have any issues?

Yes, that area is sealed. Dropping the bolt down into the valley will not hurt anything. I dropped one of the water pump guard nuts down there, but fortunately was able to fish it out with a small extendomagnet.

i have never had the intake off so i was not sure how sealed this area is. it would be nice if someone could post an illustration of the block valley area. maybe a how-to for replacing the starter might show this area. now i have to find a 10mm bolt since the wp belt guard is a little cockeyed and was rubbing on the belt pulley. it never ends.

I have had my intake off and it is sealed under there. I had a little oil sitting in there, probably for a long time. In mine there are 4 bolts to hold the intake down, you can take them out and lift it up just enough to get the bolt out if it bothers you, without unhooking any other lines.

is that for a northstar motor? don't the injectors go thru the manifold into the ports on the heads? you would think the fuel rail and other stuff would need to be dealt with. i think most new cars with plastic intakes have rubber or molded intake gaskets. thats all i need is to screw up a gasket and get a vacuum leak. I know GM vortec motors like to suck in their gaskets and get coolant leaks but the northstar intake does not have cooling passages thru it.

The Northstar intake manifold has fuel rail, injectors, throttle body, etc... To totally remove it, take out the 4 bolts and unhook the fuel lines and an electrical plug or 2. With the 96 I think the plug wires have to be removed also. It is all in there. The gaskets are all reusable, I had my intake off 3 times in one day(long story). Without taking the fuel lines off you can lift it up enough to get your hand under it.
